easier to follow the conversation threads
it may not be better, but the conversations that happen here are wonderful!
after you plurk for a while you find yourself twittering less...
Because we've moved over here?
not to mention the cool icons
I have asked for tech help for a while now and had NO response on Twitter. Many on Plurk for same question.
when people plurk an event it stays in one place on the timeline instead of cluttering the screen. Easier to follow discussions!
Teryl
shares 16 years ago
that the ability to bookmark individual conversations is great!
threaded discussions that don't go 15 pages deep like Twitter!
Just ignore the karma thing, I know we all mention it, but I know I'm not serious. It goes up if you are active
I am new to plurk, but I do like that you can choose the conversations that you follow
the bottom line is the beauty of threaded conversation. For me, Plurk is like"Cheers", homy, comfortable and focused on relationships.
when I respond to your question here, you actually see it! In twitter, not always sure ppl saw reply b/c I wasn't followed by that person
Hmmm... Yes, Everybody Knows Your Name...
Yes! I've found a much broader PLN here, that I never found on Twitter
hearing new voices- love the old twitter buds, but new is good
questions whether this will be any different as far as outcomes compared to twitter- a tool is what you make it, don't you thing?
its also easier to ignore conversations you don't need to follow. That's nearly impossible in Twitter. Had to unfollow ACarvin on Twitter
due to frequent (way too) posting. Here, it wouldn't be as intrusive...
And I like what Andy usually has to say..
Get behind? Just mark as read--its guilt free...you're just sacrificing meaningless karma...what? Did I say that? Shhhhhh.
Moreover, here you don't have to feel you have to friend everyone, since your friends friends Plurks will frequently appear...
Hmmm... Does mark all read reduce Karma?
i do't really know if marking as read reduces karma, and honestly I don't care...
Um, in order to be convinced, TRULY? You need to participate, which means you need to actually have FRIENDS, not just rock star fans.
Opening a new Plurk is like opening a chat room, or an instant messenger around a topic. You can come&go to that discussion, but it
does require active participation and not just posting "anything you think is neat."
GingerTPLC - I don't think so, you only need a couple like minded friends. Its easier to get started.
When Rock Stars join your discussions, that invites Plurkers who share that interest, and you don't have to follow all the minutia.
perhaps it would deflate some folks egos (not you Will - not directed) to not have so many followers...
True dat,
vdub144. You do need a couple of friends, like-minded or not. And we do love the mute button!
I still do both but easier to participate in conversations here then in twitter.
Make lots of friends and play : )
suggests that WillRich45 might want to promote a few FANS to FRIENDS, just a few, and it will become easier to see why its better...
Click the "alerts" button in the top left, or pick a couple of fans you know and "friend" them.
wllrich45 you may want to check your profile too...it automatically identifies you via ip where Ujoined...unless you moved to MS lately
I read your "why I hate Twitter" blog post... I agree with everyone here... easy to follow conversations and it goes deeper.
okay so that answers everyone's question "is
willrich45 reading this plurk"
yeah, there's a passionate bunch here! Welcome to the family!
convinced yet?
;0) to be honest...wondering if I can do a new tool right now...
bad news... Twitter friends fetch not working. Probably Twitter, right?
It isn't about the tool - what's your goal?
um...it is, to some extent, about the tool.
you could promote fans to friends in Plurk
it's what the tool allows us to accomplish. My guiding premise in working with faculty isn't the latest and greatest techocraze.
It's "What do you need/want in order to improve your praxis?"
Then I work with them to select the right tool from our toolbox.
willrich45 How is it about the tool? I don't understand your point. Do you mean the time involved?
Will - yes. Twitter's API gets flaky. As for tool, most of us have largely abandoned Twitter because of these threaded discussions.
Look at how this thread is already over 70, and you have only Plurkbuddy as your friend so far.
so is the idea of "friend" being cheapened by all of this? Expectations changing?
I'm currently trying to catch up on last 8 hours of cached Twits in Twhirl. Occurred to me that its like listening to a whole bunch
not 'cheapened' at all. On the contrary I have connected with people I didn't know existed 'cause I can be in a discussion with them...
of one sided conversations. With the difficulty of having to follow new folks to try to see the other side of each little conversation.
If I were NEW to Twitter now (got on when it was "less active") I think I would be very confused. Twitter really has created a
and they aren't fans or friends of mine but are connected to someone -anyone- in my PLN so MY PLN grows around like-interest & common ground
class of people who "overtweet" and shout all over others. But when you unfollow, you can't always put the conversations together again.
Makes me MORE connected MORE helpful/useful to my PLN.
You posted this Plurk at 2pm I didn't get aroun to reading it until 4:15 but I am able to read ALL of this discussion & bookmark it!
steps off soapbox... javascript
pener.emoticon(':director:')
willrich45: - I'm using fans lots and friends not so much. But I did/do the same on Twitter, pretty much.
vdub144: No such thing as "overtweeting."
one more thing, has anyone spoken of the power of importing pics and video here? It is amazing and very immediate!
And I don't think this solves your issues, Will. Plurk's good for slow responses over time. The flow gets funky when lots of folks reply.
Bud - I disagree - during primaries had to unfollow stager and carvin, kolsen drives me nuts w/ mommy posts. Like what they say, but not all
Bwana's
about Plurk
BTW: Just read Will's post. I "tipped" a month ago. I read 8hr tweets in 30min, skimming most. But this is easy to check each hr.
Mute conversations you're done with, check new responses on streams you want to keep up with, then check new Plurks - back next hour... Easy
agrees with cobannon; much easier to join the conversation. Like del.ic.ious I can see who responds to friends and "meet" them.
vdub144: See - you could unsubscribe and not have to "listen" any more.
vdub144: it's your obligation to post what you want. it's mine to unsubscribe or subscribe as I choose. And vice versa.
agreed - but I don't want to take someone out of my life because I only care about PART of their life.
If I talked 1/3 EdTech, 1/3 Scouts, and 1/3 old VWs - you would probably not be my friend on Twitter (you're not).
But here, its easier to sort that out... (although you aren't my friend here either... Well, technically speaking anyhow.)
vdub144: That would depend on many factors - the nature of our relationship, if we had one. The value of the EdTech stuff. etc.
Just mute the conversations you don't want to follow - and you can still respond to me when I participate in conversations you DO follow.
I tweet about stuff my kids say. The writing, sometimes, is for me. It's bonus if it has value for others.
Like now.
BTW: we spend TOO MUCH TIME talking about T & P! Bad for IRL Karma. :0 But I could mute that, couldn't I!?
vdub144: But I'm holistic like that. Others aren't.
BTW: P doesn't let you send private to fans, only friends, so I couldn't move this discussion out of Will's thread.
(
I have to agree...I find it hard to read both twitter and plurk....keep up with both. It is time consuming.
I do like the threaded discussions...
All the replies to one post are in the same window, unlike twitter where you have to follow a conversation over several pages
A conversation in Twitter with 110+ responses and twenty ppl responding is nearly impossible even with Tweetdeck on Twitter.
Agree with Vdub, best part about this is can track one conversation really easily and see it build
when was the last time you got 112 replies to your blog posts much less what you wrote on Twitter?
couldn't have seen the entire conversation because Twitter only goes back 10 pages.
and others are tweeting various other info while conversation is going on
separating out this conversation and all the others would be maddening! IMHO of course!
and our short attention spans would have allowed us to let it go. but we get reminders here. And it seems ok to run over the 140 character
limit just to make a point.
almost forgotten about this thread! But now it popped up on my timeline again! Great to build upon old, instead of starting anew...
to know
athorp how do you make it update in FF tab?
