don't use a firewall since my linux box is usually behind one. check firestarter or ipchains

I've tinkered with ufw (Ubuntu FireWall) it seems pretty decent. sets up pretty easy. what distro are you using nttp?

I'm talking about a firewall appliance, not a desktop. This is a stand-alone firewall distro called ipcop.

a ha, a friend of mine is big on the "build it yourself" using an old pc and m0n0wall

www.smoothwall.org/ is another, but I haven't played with it or know anyone who has.

Ipcop is a fork of smoothwall, so I am leaning in that direction. Also am looking at Gibraltar, Astaro, Untangle, and m0n0wall to name a few

and then there is FreeNAS to find a use for all the spare HDDs I have...

so many distros, so little time... One Distro to rule them all? Say Ubuntu and I'll puke.

No, that would be when you use unstable. I did the same a while back and switched to the stable branch and all was fine.

really? a year ago a coworker switched off of gentoo because they kept breaking opengl on intel video. all he touched was stable.

well it is possible to roll back an update in getoo, especially is you have 'buildpkg' in you features.
