what the definition of a "flaw" is in realism writing. How do you know something is flawed or just different?

Did we discuss "flaw" in class? I was absent on Monday. Now I'm interested too!
In previous classes where we've discussed realism, a flaw meant a shortcoming or defect in a person's character, or a less than ideal...
trait that somehow hinders the character, like Daisy is hindered by her naivete, or how Edna is hindered by the fact that her desires...
don't mesh with society's desires for her.
related to a hamartia which is the Tragic Flaw. like why, if you were to pinpoint tragedies to the protagonist's fault, is a play a tragedy?
When they show the person's outbursts as well as their good behavior.
