my 11 year old knew signing when he was little because of a speech issue. I don't think he remembers any of it now.

I used to think signs were a crutch for my now-4yo, but it turned out he had a general speech delay, so signs actually helped

how exciting ... I used to love when Little 'Ny would sign "love"
Ginkgo

he would refuse to speak and would sign instead. But now I think he signed instead bc he COULDN'T speak, not bc he was too "lazy"

I heard about that ... it is a draw back to the sign language

babygirl is too young to talk. I wasn't expecting to communicate with her for months and months yet

I also debated teaching my little one sign - we only knew one other baby who learned it, and she did use it at a "crutch"
Sara

she didn't start talking until about the age of 3, and even then it was very little...
Sara

that made us nervous about baby signing

: how do you know that the signs made the speech delay worse? maybe she would have been just as late to talk w/o signs?

: that's what I think was going on with my son, who is finally using 3+ word sentences at age 4
Ginkgo
