You have to admit some are rather amusing hyperboles. Like the one of me slaving over the keyboard.
hahaha. OK, that one cracked me up.
also, I do care, I just don't care to deal with shrill. Rational I can deal with and care about.

striatic had a very rational response, for example, and I cared and wondered about it.

See the first two paragraphs in stri's response though. Particularly the first one.
*shrug* it's not hyperbole, though, at least I don't see it that way. The ones about addressing what others have addressed?
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T20:45:03.000Z
Ah no, of course nothing of what stri said is hyperbole. My point is that he's agreeing with what others said.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T20:46:00.000Z
His "not going to criticize" doesn't mean "agree with", but rather "has been done already". I also object to the ads.

Much like KPLU drumming on about being an ad-free radio station, but having constant and increasing "sponsors"...
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T20:47:26.000Z
It doesn't matter if it's called a promo. The minimized thingie on the homepage is an ad. Pro users aren't supposed to get ads.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T20:48:45.000Z
I used to support KPLU financially, but stopped because of their duplicitous denial of having ads.

Flickr has reneged on the "no ads" promise, even if not officially yet. An the issue with the highlighted print button...
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T20:50:48.000Z
The "fixed the bug" response was rather insulting. I've seen that button for years. I don't need "an opportunity to see it".
yea, understand, it's the shrillness that turns me off, not the concern itself. I hear y'all.
I felt bad about reporting that yellow highlight thing. I thought the fix would be to turn it off for people who had never seen the button.
...not turn it on for everyone!
I mean, turn it off for people who already had print enabled... as it wasn't new for us.
being snarky, not hyperbolic : ]
snark.
the yellow button thing i don't really think is a big deal since you only see it on your own photos.
unlike the big blue ad button that actually impacts how other people see your photos, which is really all that matters anyway.
you mean the logged-out big blue banner?

wonders 2009-11-15T22:42:28.000Z
why she isn't seeing that anymore. maybe because i'm on this guest pass i can't get rid of.... meh.
oh, there's an x on it to get rid of it. making it a cartoon speech balloon was a bit silly, though.
so how about getting rid of the snapfish ad on the homepage? any chance of an [x] for that too?
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T23:11:32.000Z
Alternatively, flickr could "fix" the "bug" in every place that says pro users don't get ads.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T23:11:44.000Z
(some snark for you
)
for snark and gets snark! YAY! snark FTW!
so, the line I'm carrying indicates that the snapfish marketing (not advertising) module on the home page is now consistent....
.... with the other modules.
>
hrm. that was not supposed to make a smiley face.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-15T23:56:28.000Z
I saw that. And yet calling it "marketing" doesn't make it less of an ad, and saying it is consistent doesn't make it consistent.
consistent in what way? It's still a big grey box, and the only grey box that I have on that page?
why not just make it part of that rotating (and refreshable) little widget right above it?
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:09:40.000Z
Precisely. A changing panel that sometimes tells me that "flickr and snapfish have partnered" is informative...
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:10:31.000Z
But a constant panel telling me things like "your photos will love Snapfish!" is an AD, no matter what flickr calls it.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:11:25.000Z
One panel rotates various informative tidbits, the other continuously advertises printing via Snapfish.
'consistent' in that you can minimize it!
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:25:22.000Z
Er... have you looked at what other modules look like when minimized?
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:26:10.000Z
Compare the small font, no highlight, "Check your recent activity, to see what's new." with the big font, highlighted Snapfish ad.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:26:43.000Z
Consistent would have the ad show as the same small font, same lack of highlight, and the text should not be so pushy as it is now.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:26:51.000Z
For example, "Learn more about printing."
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:28:08.000Z
The current format is consistent with what I see with my free acount, inviting me to go pro.
Gwênlyn
says 2009-11-16T00:28:35.000Z
"Holy Smokes! That's cheap! Get a year of pro for $24.95" - a clear ad for a non-pro user.
yea, I see it, & I'm just unable to comment.
i remember when i criticized the "sponsored group" ads.
well, flickr pro accounts.
finally goes to look at his flickr page.
yeah I think if I had any say I would encourage whomever is in charge of this one to at least put a time limit on the snapfish "promo"
it does not take long to register the information that one can print at snapfish now and a smaller button..
that just said: "print with snapfish!" would be, in my eyes, a way to compromise between marketing and the promise of no ads.
as long as it was actually visually consistent with the rest of the page, which it is not, really, now.
consistent in behavior yes. in appearance no.
some of whatever paypaul is on, otherwise. it clearly has caused him to fall deeply in love with his testerical self.
so sorry I missed this one... stupid opera!
