It's an intriguing idea, and I like it in theory. But then you get thing like Duchamp's "Readymades". Fountain is my personal favorite.
Along with Duchamp, there is another artist who embraces a similar approach...
...his name was Piero Manzoni. He would do things like blow up balloons and sell them because they contained "his air"...
...he also did "Base of the World" in which he created an upside-down pedestal that is supposed to present the world as a work of art.
