My character types are unlikely accidental protagonists driven by specific personal values, unrepentantly punitive antagonists with self-directed morality, intrepid supporting characters with undying loyalty to those they love, and the plucky comic relief.

Bonus if the character died in canon so I obviously had to fix that. ^^

I also tend to go for the characters whose place in the story isn't inextricably bound up with performing a socially-gendered role; they have skills or intentions relevant to the plot and don't have to go through the dance of having to approach a problem from a very specific and often awkward/inconvenient direction because of their gender.

Even before I really knew there was a nonbinary community, I found characters like Vaarsuvius narratively restful, in a way. All the other characters had to do so much coy social posturing to make sure everyone noticed how manly or womanly they were, while V was there for books and sarcasm.

It's probably one reason I play more side characters than main characters; especially in genre fiction, protagonists are often shunted into relationships as part of their story arc and side characters don't have to have that kind of focus on them (unless it's a romcom).

And relationships are very often very gendered.

It's nice that nowadays one can find some canon ones that aren't.

V's spouse (ex? I'm not caught up) is also gender-unknown :-D

I have a special fondness for that kind of relationship. Especially an aro/ace one c:

Seeing that canonized would be a dream come true.

Most of the time there's one nonbinary character in the relationship, though Owl House did it well.

Bel had to make a performance of being genderfluid for most of the Vorkosigan series because most of the Wormhole Nexus is intolerantly-to-tolerantly prejudiced, but did end up in a fairly healthy canonship where their gender wasn't a factor.

But yeah, most of my characters are involved with plot and platonic relationships more often than with romance.

I genuinely like the CR I get with that kind of content; it's fun and satisfying.

My characters also often have skillsets they're proud of and take satisfaction in -- Gai's martial arts, Ram's applied risk-assessment algorithms, Red's voice, Cheris's calendrical math, Bel's enthusiastic soldiering, even Gorn's disk-editing.

Some make that their identity, like Gai and Eckert, while for others it's a job they're proud of or a hobby they enjoy.
