anise's tragic backstory is that she has two loving parents who are genuinely very good and caring people

and it sucks!! because they are actually TOO kind and very dumb, and they give all their money away to charity and scams while they are literally starving

anise is basically parentified from a young age because she has to figure out a way to protect these two people who she loves very much but who are very much the cause of their own problems

so her two-facedness starts very young, as she's quickly exposed to the ugly sides of society and also develops the nerve to fight back against it. but also has to act sweet for her parents because she doesn't want to disappoint them because obviously they want to raise her to be a good person.

but then her parents get bailed out by the Grand Maestro of the Order of Lorelei, a high-ranking priest in the religion they all practice! he shoulders their debt, anise gets to go to school, everybody gets a job at the cathedral

but of course there's a catch, and the catch is that anise becomes the grand maestro's spy

so when she's about 11 she gets assigned as a Fon Master Guardian to their supreme leader, Fon Master Ion, but actually, she's supposed to spy on the leader

also unfortunately.... she develops a massive bodyguard crush on Ion and every day she betrays him and feels like absolute dirt because of it

her betrayals lead to lots of allies and innocents getting killed, and eventually, it leads to Ion getting killed, too

so in order to live with the crushing guilt, Anise resolves to carry out Ion's will in trying to make a better world. to basically accomplish the things that he would have liked to accomplish.

anise's obsession with money comes from wanting to buy her and her parents' freedom, and from the position she was in, pretty much the only way to do that was to marry into money or otherwise manage some get-rich-quick scheme

(though i took her from the end of her canon, where she's mostly given up on marrying rich... partly to spare everyone having to deal with a child aggressively flirting with your adult characters)

her goal now is to reform the Order of Lorelei, because her religion sucks real bad and it needs to suck less

specifically, she wants to become the next Fon Master
so if she's successful at this, then the next time your character meets anise she may have become the new pope

anyway anise ended up having mostly cute and wholesome cr with people... i think it could have gone a very different direction if this game wasn't so heavy on compelled killers

because anise is a liar and a traitor and a murderer and she absolutely hates herself for it, she's extremely hard on people who are guilty of similar crimes

but yeah... there weren't many people she could actually lash out at, so she didn't for the most part

oh yeah... one big thing about anise's home and her religion is that it was largely based on the Score, a prophecy detailing the entire history of the world from its beginning to its end

anise grew up being taught that following the Score was the right thing to do, in a world where everyone was comfortable with the idea of everything being predetermined!

and the main plot of Abyss is largely about the world departing from the Score because it turns out that no free will is bad, actually

but for her first week or two there was a lot of getting used to the fact that most people she met came from worlds where free will was guaranteed and they never had anything like a Score

but it also gave her a lot of hope for the direction she wants her world to go in, like she can see that a free world is possible!! entire worlds full of people are already living free!

anyway, for more sprace stuff... anise had a role!

she got a joint role with charles as her partner

which was incredible for a lot of reasons (largely because they have great shared gremlin energy)

they got to send trial items to people on fridays... and they'd do tasks for exclusive scrap goods

anise was just being a little liar whenever she whined about not getting presents in trial. she didn't get any because she was fucking delivering them

they were also the designated ac killers of the game but we didn't end up getting any ac kills! alas

when i started noticing who the roles were i was like anise you little shit. wonderful.

oh yeah... also anise and rodya were the ones who recruited scrap to the crew

their crowning achievement. our medicinecat
