https://images.plurk.com/70IKpwZx4NfxZmJZel3eX3.jpg and I have asked this trivia question before, who was the last British Prime Minister to be a member of the House of Lords while PM?

Alec Douglas-Home, who as 14th Earl of Home (pr. Hume) was unexpectedly chosen in 1963 by the Conservative Grandees to replace Harold Macmillan as PM.

he renounced his title after becoming PM, and for a period was neither in the Lords not the Commons, and stood and won a by-election for a vacant seat, and became an MP in the Commons

he narrowly lost the 1964 election to Harold Wilson, and did rather better than expected. It was the first general Election to be heavily televised, and he did badly against Wilson, who was a great TV performer

unusually for modern times, Douglas-Home served as Foreign Secretary under Head Heath 1970-74, a feat repeated currently by David Cameron
