I've been to North Bend many times, as well as the RR, and that was just a coffee stop, unplanned
The real trip was further east, to Roslyn, where unlike Twin Peaks they actually filmed Northern Exposure
bizarrely it looks pretty much exactly like it did in the show
and was super charming in its own right
Aaahhh i watched Northern Exposure so hardcore in the day. Happy to see you at the radio station. Chris in the Morning was my fav.
magicom: so I've been hearing about it my whole life but never had access until recently
and it's definitely hit maybe top 5?
it's so good, and so progressive, and so wholesome but adult
and I live 1 1/2 hours away from where it was filmed!! so it was really fun to visit
Also I... kinda wanna to move here
but I think that might be my general ennui talking
Omg you get to watch it for the first time?? I haven’t seen it in ages i’m glad it holds up. I remember it being all those things.
oh heeyyyy welcome to my side of the mountains!
Who doesn’t want to live in a quaint village where you can be quirky!
Roslyn SPECIFICALLY keeps stuff looking like the show
magicom: I have always
wanted to watch it
however let me tell you that the people in Roslyn 100% do not want anyone to move there and they will tell you that TO YOUR FACE
But I've never been able to until amazon, and it's even better than I expected it to be. It's woker. It's more adult (while being fucked up and silly). It's everything to me.
And I tried to feel some folks out today but with little success
Because I was in several shops and the historical museum
and I was like "ok you keep telling me this cool stuff to come to. Would it be ok for me to come to it?
and they're like blank stare obvioulsy
there are a lot of transplants there already and they'll give you one story! But the amount of bitterness and resentment to "206ers" from people who've lived here more than one generation is a constant undercurrent to the community outreach work that I do
check out the FB page "What's Up Roslyn" for a better sense of the vibe
mistakesweremade: To be fair. One lady I spoke to mentioned Seattle transplants making a stink of the "but we should have a Trader Joe's" variety
HOnestly I've gotten that vibe from North Bend
Which is way closer to Seattle
But the thing is... I want to move to Roslyn, Or North Bend, Or w/e, precisely because it's not wherever I came from. And it's a pity we can't figure these things out. Don't move to a place you want to be the place you came from?
Roslyn does have legitimate concerns and ongoing beef about the lack of a grocery store (the nearest is in Cle Elum, and it's THE MOST EXPENSIVE SAFEWAY IN THE STATE because of its position in the I-90 rec corridor) but they for sure do not want a Trader Joes
mistakesweremade: The other... okay this is like, galaxy brain mode so I don't think there's an answer from anyone, let alone you. But. Where do I belong when I come from a long line of transplants and disaffected hippies?
On purpose I visited the local grocer and found it well stocked and extremely cognizant of local priorities.
so like...speaking as a military brat, I've gotten a general pass from the locals because I'm from a service family. So they don't hold my lack of local-ness against me! And also I have an AUDIBLY ITALIAN last name, which aligns nicely with one of the remnant immigrant miner ethnic groups. There's definitely a contingent of old hippies, but--
--it feels like folks are less cool with that group since the explosion of 'van life' types, if that makes sense?
I was at the historical society museum today, which was super ethnic and all that. But the volunteer was... someone with Roslyn roots, who was also a van lyfe hippie who settled here maybe 15 years ago
the community's mid-massive-battle against a huge developer that wants to put in an RV park/monufactured home complex, because they don't want to end up a parking lot for Seattle's giant campers. It's like the one development plan I've ever seen 100% of a community oppose!
But she mentioned it becoming a Seattle bedroom community WHICH IS INSANE
yeah exactly, the cutoff for vanlifers was pre-seattle-explosion (so maybe 20 years ago)
because i drove there and back today and i'm fuckhausted
it's gotten a lot more intense since Covid, because telework has become more accessible across industries, but there are people who legit vanpool every damn day
what do i do with my life babe I'm tired and I'm good people
(I also went back and forth to Seattle today because of the Greenway Spring Breakfast and I fully took a nap afterwards)
also, side note, it's nutso we haven't met up for brekkie or coffie etc
I'd probably suggest starting down in Ellensburg first, because it's a little more accepting of change/turnover/churn, what with the college
also SLIGHTLY more housing available
I KNOW I pointed at this plurk like "but that's here!!"
also it's a bit cheaper than Roslyn, which often charges Seattle-like rents because they know they can
Oh gotcha! Yeah I am slightly flippant because I haven't yet started looking at moving.
My rental sitch at the mo is good. But I am ... pondering my future.
if you aim for between college quarters, you can snipe some decent rentals as students come and go. Unfortunately Roslyn rental costs are priced for Seattle paychecks :/
And small towns have an attraction
they do, I fucking love it here
and I'm plenty aware that there's no stopping the local population growth
But yeah I have no real life budget
stick your head in the sand about it all you want, neighbors, the only limiting factor on growth here is WATER
Yeah. It's... the balance between, we can't alter that real life change, but it's happening
this place is really in the throes of those growth pains and it's simultaneously fascinating and upsetting. Nowhere else has solved the problem, so everywhere is making it up as they go!
