(Mine was Dungeon Meshi, which I rambled about over
here)
watching a friend stream a first playthrough of final fantasy 6. it's so good because the game has so many little character things you can stumble into but also the sprites are so expressive at this point
but the friend's reactions have been incredible
sixflights awww, fun! I've heard of various FFs over the years but know little about it. Show me some of the good expressions?
right here - mute it if you don't want to hear my commentary XD this is one of my favorite pieces and it's missable!
(i am that final fantasy junkie who will talk your ears off about the series and 6 is one of my favs)
I am UNREASONABLY EXCITED about Jonesy Fortnite getting a Captain America outfit starting tomorrow. According to the leaks, he's like halfway-ish through the next Battle Pass, which is gonna take a bit, but will be totally worth it, because the teasers look AWESOME.
Marvel Entertainment (@Marvel) on X sixflights Have started watching it and am enjoying both the action and your commentary. The little wink!
The franchise is quite long-standing by now, right? I remember hearing about it from way back. When did 6 come out?
MewtwoWarrior man, all this time I was just thinking of Fortnite as the "make your character dance" game
Who's Jonesy?
That's so many Marvel characters!
infiniteviking: if you're bored, ff1 through 6 (minus the last bit of 6 sob) is on my yt and you can see the way the sprites and stories change. these are the pixel remasters so things like music got updates but the originals are over 30 years old iirc.
I'd have to look specifically but i know ff10 just had its 20 year birthday lmfao
I have to be in the right zone to start multiseries watchthroughs, but having the link is good anyway!<3 It's amazing how long ago that was. Time is so weird.
that is very valid! and right? it feels like forever and yesterday because some i only just played for the first time
Fortnite has SO MUCH going on, lol. Every few months they change up the theme of the game and there's a story going on in the background - like there's quests and stuff about what's happening. Jonesy's one of the few consistent characters they have, he's been a focus for a good while of what story there is.
I'll try and gather my thoughts for a more detailed rundown later, it's absurdly complicated and it's hard to keep up with all the tidbits - including some stuff released in comics only and not the game itself. 🤭
And, yeah! The "theme" of the season that just started is Marvel - they've been running a plot with some kind of Pandora's Box thing this year and I think Doctor Doom opens it up and causes havoc, lol
It certainly looks like Doom is opening a box of havoc there XD
XD Indeed! 🤭
I'm not exactly sure what's going on with the box of havoc, there's two sisters connected to it, one has fire powers and one just got water powers I think and the Greek gods were somehow involved and then there was a wasteland and now there's Doctor Doom??? XD
Fortnite is very good at invoking the feeling of playing with toys and just the wildest stuff happening, lol
OKAY SO Fortnite's main game mode is where you go up against 99 other people (or bots) and you're trying to be the last one standing. There's a lot of variations, but that's the basics.
The gameplay is where you collect various guns to shoot your opponents.
The making your character dance part comes in with the emotes, there's tons of them and more all the time. There's even some character-specific ones, I think the Xenomorph from Alien has a special one.
A *TON* of the lore is hard to keep track of, because once the season is done, it's gone. And even if you play a lot, there's some environmental storytelling you can miss sometimes.
But, the wiki is really good at keeping track of everything, the official YouTube posts some of the events and stuff, and people post their own videos and stuff.
Anyways, each season has NPCs and stuff you can talk to, all sorts of neat locations that sometimes change as the season goes on, and there's usually quests where the characters give you missions and tell you what's going on.
As far as I can tell, some of the early lore seems to be based around trying to make logical sense of the gameplay, but I think they've moved away from that lately. (Things such as why there's a bunch of different versions of the same character, why the gameplay is like it is, stuff like that.)
Hopefully I'll have even more for you by then, but I'll try to not Go Off too much, lol 🤭
SO Fortnite has specific character models that they use to give different outfits to. They've branched out a LOT since the beginning and have got way more unique and generic ones now. Some of the generic ones are also default ones, if you don't own any characters or have them active.
(As a sidebar, Fortnite is fairly decent with diversity, a good example of it is the Tron outfits - both the male and female versions have five different skin tones and appearances:
Reality: MCP-82 | Fortnite Wiki | Fandom)
(A sidebar to the sidebar, I started playing a few years(?) after Fortnite started and I've skipped a good handful of seasons in there, SO a lot of this and what follows is what I've read on the wiki or elsewhere, SO I definitely could've got scrambled on some stuff because it's ABSURDLY complicated, lol)
As far as I can tell, Jonesy was one of the early generic models. As such, he's got a TON of variants, some random stuff and some related to his storyline. His silhouette is also used for a lot of the emote and dance icons. He's kinda the face of Fortnite in some ways.
From a purely meta standpoint, it feels like they took the generic character and then built a story around him to try and explain why there's so many different versions of him and then really built it out from there, lol
So he's in this really weird place where he's both a completely generic character and a main story character and occasionally it's a little tricky to figure out which is which, lol. (And, on occasion they've had the variants doing stuff while the main character does his own thing, lol)
I'm gonna try really hard to not get too much in the weeds here and to balance gushing, information, and making sense to people who don't often poke through the wiki for fun. 🤭
Keeping track of everything is so complicated, I made a webpage linking to everything I can find - it was mainly because there were a TON of story-ish promos posted to Twitter during the season I joined and I wanted to keep track of them in order and how his outfit changed over time. I keep finding new stuff to add to it, lol.
ALSO I haven't watched/listened to everything posted/linked on there, so, please, please don't feel like you have to - I'm just showing off how much there is, lol
Also, Fortnite made a Jonesy fancam video and I put it at the top for the giggles and later tried to move it to the bottom and it broke all of the other videos, so it's currently a load-bearing fancam until I figure out why moving it breaks everything. 🤣
(I stated playing because of the Tron stuff and stuck around because of Jonesy and how neat the game is.)
SO ANYWAY his full name is John Jones, so the characters often call him Jones or Jonesy.
And they totally made a joke about the cat from Alien sharing a name with him. 🤭
SO as far as the game goes, he starts off working for the bad guys. (He has a bizarre backstory that's only revealed in a comic, but we'll get to that later, lol)
If you're familiar with the Hunger Games movies, I kinda get the vibes of the gamerunners from them. Nobody perma-dies in the games of Fortnite, though I'm notttt exactly sure what happens to them, lol, just that they get teleported away? And some of the official cutscenes and promos have people falling into glowing blue cubes Tron: Legacy style.
ANYWAY he's an Agent for the bad guys, trying to keep the game running. I'm not sure what exactly he does for them, lol
ANYWAY at the point I jumped in Something Is Happening and he gets the idea that he needs to bring characters from other worlds to cause even more chaos to keep people from escaping, I think.
Most of the characters he gets are from familiar things, but I think there's a few original characters in there.
They built a storyline with the promos, with some of them his outfit changed as he picked up stuff from the other worlds.
A lot of them are audio-only, but there's a few animated ones that are really neat.
Anyway, he succeeds is causing chaos - so much chaos, in fact, that it starts destabilizing things in a dangerous way.
The bad guys aren't doing anything to fix it, so he decides to take matters into his own hands, defy them, and save the day.
After that point, he's solidly a good guy, going up against his former employers and whatever other bad guys show up.
He goes into hiding for a bit - apparently dressed as a cow for a while, lol - and at some point is captured by his former employers - even the wiki has no idea when or how he was captured, lol
There's an event I haven't watched all of that has some fun stuff, his old boss is torturing him to death and the Rock shows up to save him.
In the process, something is activated that flips the whole island, giving an excuse to change up the entire map.
The End - Chapter 2 Finale (Full In-game Event Video...
(There's one bit in there that makes me laugh, the Rock lets Jonesy borrow a Cool Gun. Later he asks about where it is and Jonesy says he dropped it in the multiverse core. 🤭 )
He stays in his prisoner jumpsuit for a while, eventually tying the top off much like Chell from Portal 2, so I'm quite fond of it.
Anyway, there's a battle with robots and stuff, his old boss is still determined to kill him.
She's stopped and Jonesy and the Rock jump through a portal to go after a guy that the Rock has beef with.
I think that adventure is in a comic, but I haven't read it yet, lol
Anyway, Jonesy shows back up in the opening cutscene for the next season to watch the victory fireworks.
And that's kiiiinda the end of the storyline for a bit - there's some more stuff that happens, but those plot threads maybe got dropped when they switched out who writes the game's story, lol
There's some more stuff that goes on, I'm not super sure, I think Jonesy's old boss finally has a change of heart and maybe hangs out with a Transformer? I didn't play much for a while there, lol
Anyway, there's some kind of time travel thing as an excuse to bring back the original map to play on that culminates into bringing in a bunch of new game modes.
Jonesy gets a new outfit for the new island/story:
It kinda reminds me of the pics I've seen of Vash's outfit in the new Trigun anime, so I sometimes think of him as "Trigun Jonesy" 🤭
ANYWAY he's not too happy, his best friend, a sentient banana, was kidnapped by a group of rich people.
So he teams up with a Pandora's Box lady, who is going after her sister, who is one of the rich bad guys.
The banana is saved and the sister opens Pandora's Box, which gets the attention of the Greek gods.
They defeat the Greek gods, and then some people show up with a Mad Max-esque wasteland and apparently Doctor Doom has been wandering around and then he opens Pandora's Box himself aaaaand that's where we are now.
I like Jonesy because he often follows the rule of cool and the rule of funny at the same time. Like, he's doing all this awesome stuff, but being a doofus about it. 🤭
OH YES HIS BACKSTORY I ALMOST FORGOT, LOL
According to the wiki, apparently he lived in a really dangerous world and the bad guys showed up and offered to protect his wife and kids if he worked for them.
Apparently, part of the deal was that he's now immortal and they wouldn't let him go see his family or retire, so like his closest family is dead, he's never met his great-great-etc. grandkids and stuff and they won't let him leave his job.
And like I haven't played every season, but in what I have, that's never been even hinted at, lol
It's just kinda so at odds with the goofy nature of Fortnite, and, like, he's a fairly silly guy, so there's no hint of that misery there, lol
ANYWAY, TO END IT ON A CHEERIER NOTE
Out of all of the versions of him, one of my favorites is this winter cozy sweater one:
SO THAT'S MY BOY JONESY
I hope this was fun, entertaining, and made at least a scrap of sense. 🤭
An Adventure:
1. There's a different game mode with a different Jonesy
2. I discover that there's a character exclusive to that mode named Sarah! Yay!
3. Look up Sarah on the Fortnite wiki
4. Get thrown for a loop:
🤣
i watched a playthrough of 1000xRESIST recently and it's kind of been gnawing on the inside of my brain
also to a less Intrusive Thoughts degree, Lea from CrossCode
still need to play the DLC
thank you for coming in here because I still need to go through the stuff above! but yes, tell me what's brain-gnawing about 1000xRESIST, I don't know what it is!
it's...... man where to even begin...
it's very surreal, has some strong Nier vibes
a lot of interrogation of human complexity vs. personal narrative/mythos and how those propagate in time
some really tangled themes of family, generational trauma, and identity
