One of the biggest ways is probably with how Angel couldn’t be openly gay with his family or society at the time. He was constantly putting on a show performative heteronormativity. This masking carries over in a new way into his afterlife, obviously.
But suddenly being in a world where he can be as gay as he wants, where what he wants, say what he wants, Angel made up for lost time hard. It also probably leant to his vulnerability with Val, thinking he’s found a real and loving partner who accepts him for who he really is, eager to be loved and accepted where he wasn’t on Earth.
Because of his father and the general nature of the mob (onto of hiding his sexuality), Angel isn’t very trusting, and still keeps a lot of himself hidden/wears that mask.
It desensitized him to death even before he got down to Hell, where killing a guy hardly means a thing anymore since they don’t stay dead.
2. What is something would avoid at all costs? Showing his feet? Hurting children. He is very big on protecting innocence, even if he’s not the most wholesome character for someone to find themselves around.
I believe in both lives he wouldn’t kill children or (knowingly) put them in harms way. See: his protective behaviour with Nifty, and his doting on Fat Nuggets
17. What aspects of character development are you most invested in for them? I really enjoy the drama, obviously, but very interested in Angel really learning and believing his has value beyond his body. He’s on his way, but it’s decades of shit to work through, and I enjoy exploring these issues with realistic ups and downs.
Recovery is very rarely if ever a straight upward line, and I think it’s important for Angel to experience both in order to work towards accepting and valuing himself.
