...i'm really curious about the mechanism behind the hydrophobic water. (thinking) like is it a surface adhesion thing?
Hooded Figure
That'd be my guess -- wiki says fumed silica is "microscopic droplets of amorphous silica fused into branched, chainlike, three-dimensional secondary particles which then agglomerate into tertiary particles. The resulting powder has an extremely low bulk density and high surface area."
Hooded Figure
So probably all the water's grabbing power is being used on silica particles, and the water can't interact with other water molecules, which are also holding onto silica particles.
Exacerangutan
and then the silica-silica interface has very weak adhesion i guess
Hooded Figure
yeah, and "silica dust on the outside" explains the difference in appearance between the non-coated droplets and the coated droplet
Hooded Figure
(thinking) the one droplet would have to take up all the silica's bonds too, so the next droplet that comes along has no room to attach

What happens when you microwave Soap? #science #shor...
people out there doing a true public service by letting us satisfy our burning curiosity without doing this ourselves
Hooded Figure
now I wonder if microwaving a bit of liquid soap could make it easier to clean a microwave; hopefully someone has done that experiment too!
Exacerangutan
it's usually not good to run a microwave without a significant ballast material (i.e. something with a water content or otherwise able to absorb microwaves) to provide an energy sink
Hooded Figure
so that experiment would be better done with a liquid soap/water combination?
Exacerangutan
well you could i guess but a liquid soap also probably wouldn't foam up unless you boiled the water, and even if it made a lot of suds that way, it not like it would scrub... (thinking) I could see boiling some water in the microwave might help with cleaning the way soaking dishes does, though.
Hooded Figure
yeah, "heat the water so steam soaks the interior" is what I was thinking of, and wondering if adding liquid soap to that would help degrease the surfaces or if something about the heating process desaponifies the soap or something
Hooded Figure
(which probably not, because hot water is also used to wash dishes normally anyway?)
Exacerangutan
i think it's more that the detergent probably wouldn't evaporate well
Exacerangutan
tho idk for sure
Hooded Figure
yeah, that'd be a roadblock!
Exacerangutan
obviously it depends on the detergent involved etc
Hooded Figure

what about vinegar? would it still do its antibacterial thing at a higher temperature?
Exacerangutan
i don't think it decomposes before boiling, anyway, so i'd think it should
Hooded Figure
that sounds like the way to go, then! :-D
