unless you count "Japan stops going on a big murder spree in China / Manchuria (messy political situation meant de facto Chinese government control was dubious at the time) and they should stop" as a "US interest" the answer is a big fucking NO

because they were the only ones we were actually actively pressuring before the US got involved

(Germany declared war on us like 3 days after Pearl Harbor if I remember right, and considering they'd already not just attacked but sunk US Navy vessels well before that point and we didnt declare war, it's a hard sell saying we only went after them for our own interests)

but also: consider that with all the criticisms you could make about Mao, Stalin, Churchill, and FDR, the fact that they all agreed that the other guys were much worse and a solid majority of the rest of the world agreed with them....

at least he said there were no "good guys" in the war, so he's not trying to out-Nazi the NC guy

but I gotta wonder what he thinks should have happened. all belligerents bombed each other into the Stone Age?

As far as I know he's never specified, but my money is on him thinking the US should have somehow stayed out of the war

(despite, y'know, Japan attacking Pearl Harbor and Germany declaring war on us)
