finally discovered the/a correct subset of words to use in Google search to find some slightly more useful mentions of router issues involving ethernet.

reading reports by various other people (going up to a recent timeframe) of not being able to get the ethernet sockets on their new TalkTalk routers to work at all; and some found the ethernet died later and/or repeatedly after they had already sent back the old routers which did work.

that, as a MeToo, the correct action is soon going to have to be to return the new router as defective and try to keep going on the old router (despite TalkTalk staff's recent attempts to sabotage it).

probably have to try the reset button on the new router anyway (while powered but not connected to anything else?) but the way other people are reporting that the ethernet sockets can suddenly die even after a router box was initially working does not give much hope of reliability.

it seems so unlikely that such a consumer-level product that’s been around for ages would be unreliable at the Ethernet layer. Those things are just a Broadcom chip with almost nothing else in there.
