the Baz Lerman Romeo +Juliet is the version of Romeo and Juliet that hits where Shaespeare was trying to hit. I will die on this hill.
latest #16
it's supposed to be violent and sexy and beautiful
think future generations will try to put on dainty sanitized recreations of fight club for pre teens ?
not gonna lie. it's the only version of R&J that i enjoy.
and i think that's because the tone of that movie matches the content finally
and both Mercutio and Tybalt are gender envy before I even knew what that was
I feel like this is literally the vibe that it was meant to have all along
but yes, hard agree, best adaptation to date
Harold Perrineau's Mercutio is one of my favorite Shakespearean performances of all time. He's the gold standard Mercutio imo.
I think there's a reason there hasn't been a "big" production of it since, and it's because the Lerman one is generational.
Like how Olivier Shakespeare defined the 1940s.
Perrineau as Mercutio was my entire heart. Gods, maybe i will put this on again in the background today...
agreed also John Leguizamo as tybalt. now that's the prince of cats!
right?? /fans self/ i had such a deep hate for that play until that movie.
