Anyone ever try making crockpot mac and cheese? I'm going to attempt it. I saw a recipe that looked interesting. I've got a bunch of elbow macaroni leftover from when Jim and Sasja came to visit last Sunday. It's too much to store in my jar so I figured perfect time to make M&C. Here's the recipe.
Went to the shops yesterday to get all the cheeses. Going to have to make a lot of substitutions but I still think it should come out ok. 🤞 We don't have American cheese here. I could only find a slightly sharp cheddar, no evaporated milk - using cream instead. Oddly enough I couldn't find any smoked Gouda, or any Gouda.
That was weird because it's a Dutch cheese. I did find a sambal jong belegen cheese that might be a good substitute. I might make it today, if I have the energy. Also thinking about just doing it on the stove though in a big pot. Haven't decided yet. Depends upon if I feel like lifting my crockpot off the top shelf. LOL
I cook macaroni. Sometimes I cube ham and add it to the macaroni. I make an ordinary bechamel sauce and when it's done, I add paprika, cheese, Sharp Cheddar, Gouda, Gruyere (if I have it) and Parm. A jack cheese works too. I stir the pasta and sauce together. Put in a square pan, sprinkle some panko on top. Bake just long enough to get a nice crust.
You can broil for a nice crust --- and absolutely not mushy pasta. You have to add paprika. and of course salt and pepper. Some smoked onion powder is nice, too. (In the sauce)
I have to agree with Cajsa. Mac & Cheese is easy and fast the old fashioned way. I don't know what the crock pot does for you except add risk of mushy pasta
Swamp_Daddy: no I wound up resting today instead. Tomorrow I've got errands so possibly once I get home, if I still have energy. Tonight I just had a bagel sandwich for dinner. I'll tag you once I make it!
