recently read Annabel. It's definitely not science fiction, fantasy, or military, and it was just nominated for the Giller prize.

maybe try October the First is Too Late. Yes it's kinda-sorta sci-fi but mostly it's a great story. :-)

If you want a long read go for the Dark Tower series by S. King... the first book (The Gunslinger) is a good read on it's own

There is many books by Deaver the bone collector is he first in a I believe 12 or 13 books series.

Sorry! Might be harder to find, yes. Another fine story is "Life Of Pi." One of my favorites and a Canadian author no less.
