recently read Annabel. It's definitely not science fiction, fantasy, or military, and it was just nominated for the Giller prize.

I'm also reading Contact, but you've probably read it before. Also, it's SF smut.

maybe try October the First is Too Late. Yes it's kinda-sorta sci-fi but mostly it's a great story.

If you want a long read go for the Dark Tower series by S. King... the first book (The Gunslinger) is a good read on it's own

Sorry! Might be harder to find, yes. Another fine story is "Life Of Pi." One of my favorites and a Canadian author no less.
