Must be sort of unnerving to see that and realize that you are not even remotely shielded from the radiation that is making those auroras.

eh, nice little suntan. Although I thought they actually are... that, or the aurora-causing radiation isn't harmful to humans.
It isn't harmful to humans on the ground, but it's one of the issues with extended spaceflight.
The ISS is inside the magnetic field of the Earth, so it's more protected than it would be if it weren't, but they're still getting nuked.
