IMHO - don't. About 10 years ago I used to swear by lattice mult. It allowed my kids to multiply and get the right answer as long as they

knew their x tables. What I've come to realize, though, is that it allowed them to multiply without understanding multiplication, though.

my students to it, but not until after they can explain to me partial-products, and how the "traditional" algorithm works. Then I may ask

Are you talking about dot product and cross product? Those aren't tricks, they are solid mathematical concepts.
