The Fiat is out cause I'm looking for something at least a little bigger than my corolla.

So far the Subaru and the Escape are to only two that don't look ridiculous with a kayak rack.

my mother-in-law has an Escape and loves it

she even figured out how to use the Ford Sync features

I have been leaning towards the impreza hatchback. But I'm trying to keep my cost down. It may come down to an Escape - Impreza faceoff.

ugh.. sorry Jared but the Prius is a terrible "driver's car" worse handling, acceleration, cargo, and snow traction than my corolla

agreed Matt about the prius. Not much fun to drive. My impreza hatchback is a whole lot of fun to drive. Even in the winter! WOOOOO

I think I am going to try and convince a dealer to let me test one of each for a day or so to decide.

I'm still leaning towards the impreza but the Fusion is cheaper, and I want to be comfortable on the 150 highway miles/week I do.

For a day or so, probably not. But you probably could rent one. Ask dealer to set it up for you...
