mine was turned onto automatic and i've always paid manually, so double check and make sure they didn't do it to you too
Fortunately my shit wasn't supposed to renew until March but yeah, it was fucking ON.
make sure to double check all your paids. i just found some of my rp accounts on auto too.
It's strange because I checked two weeks ago on all my accounts, and all automatic payments were turned off.
Two of my accounts had it on auto payments too.
So at least a hundred people had their browser malfunction simultaneously today?
regardless of the cause, it'd be smart to check just in case.
It's too convenient to just say "It's not us" when so many accounts have had this issue. We can't all have developed selective amnesia.
I mean, it is possible that hell's freezing over, we did get a lot of snow here last night.
not enought lineface
I just checked my payment history.
the last two payments were manual so. '-'
It's in your head, Celi...
LJ says you are lying they didn't do that
souji's were turned on...
but my others weren't. i always do one-off payments.
it looks like there are a ton about this up there, which is good. hopefully we get the word out to everyone so no one gets ripped off.
how do I tell if they've switched it or not? This page isn't very informative.
That is really fucked up, because they've been claiming not to save any credit card info on their servers.
if it was under automatic payments, it'd have a section that says it
mine right now only lists manual payments/gifts
since i turned the automatic off
THIS IS ALWAYS WHY I GIFT RP ACCOUNTS
yeah mine are always gift accounts
Again, can someone please tell me exactly how to tell if my account has been switched from manual payments to automatics?
I'm distressed and confused and I'd like not to pay money for something I don't want to pay money for.
If it's on automatic payments, it will be obvious.
You'll see a "turn off automatic payments" option.
This story is pretty worrisome
I'm not even playing blame game here. Just the fact that that's even possible is really scary
question! if your accounts used the paid trial glitch, but don't have any payment info at all, does this affect them?
cause my only legit-paid account is still on manual payments.
If it doesn't have your paid info, it can't sign you up to be paid.
None of my paid accounts were changed.
Mine weren't either, but I am glad I checked..
It's just a bug. I would not witch-hunt for this. They're aware there are plenty of unresolved bugs from their change.
It's good to check, definitely.
It's a pretty serious bug that can cause some financial problems for accounts being billed that should not be.
and LJ really needs to get on that rather than just blame it on an auto fill in form.
Frannyan: Agreed. It's a dangerous bug to have around. Shifting blame will not prevent it from happening again.
I remember back when, if there was an error like this, Lj would go 'oh hell, that wasn't supposed to happen! sorry, we'll fix it'
Instead of going 'IT'S NOT OUT FAAAUUUULLLLLLT'
Even just a "We're looking into it, we'll keep you posted" would be better than "NOT OUR BAD"
all this about that one thread linked earlier? Because I didn't read it that way at all
I really do feel bad for that one staffer trying to answer questions because it seems like that person doesn't have the information
it sounded to me like the staffer was like "I.. don't know. Maybe you should get in touch with billing"
because there's no way possible what he/she said could be the cause of the problem.
There was an explanation given for the cause of it that was utter BS.
It was blamed on people's browsers form auto fill in.
Which is kinda impossible.
and a statement that it would be impossible for it to happen.
Which again is not true because it obviously has.
Because that's not how I read that at all
it's not "BS", but a staffer taking a shot in the dark, admitting that s/he wasn't sure and was working from limited experience
Which means either that staffer is making things up, has been told wrong info, or is lying. My money is on the middle option.
, and later advising the affected parties to get in touch with the billing department
I called it BS because it's not at all a possible cause.
S/he advised the customer to get in touch with the department that would have more answers. Why was that the wrong thing to do?
Not saying that he/she was intending to BS. Sorry if it came off wrong.
It's a possible cause in the case of a user who doesn't know how to use the internet
auto-fill in forms are the same as going "Ma'am are you sure your computer is plugged in"
If you don't know the cause, you don't make this sort of response.
Expect that it had been reported multiple times already at that point.
And there's literally no way for that to actually work.
Because there is no form on the page that displays the account status.
It really should have been said "I'm not sure, please contact billing"
without trying to say it was a browser error.
S/he was throwing it out as a possibility, because it's really hard to narrow down possible causes without kicking a person off their
computer and going "just -- let me fix this"
It was prefaced with uncertainty and ends with "check with billing for the info I don't have"
It was also in a post filled with anger and hostility
Can you link me to the page, there was more to the response I want to double check.
When hundreds of people are screaming at the same time, it can be difficult to keep up
Being in that sort of post is even more reason to be very careful with what's said.
I think it came from earlier in this plurk
I just started reading and going "omg that poor tech what are they doing to him D
quot;
This is the part that was a mistake because it's just.. not at all what was being said.
and yeah, I feel bad for taht staffer too.
Especially since I don't think it is a tech.
Right, but that's the part that comes AFTER the "I'm not SURE but maybe this?" part
which in turn comes after "we don't keep your c/c info on-hand, please contact billing"
And you know -- it's GOOD that they don't have access to credit card stuff in-house
Which again was a very bad idea and honestly, that part quoted there really did feel like deflecting.
has never given money to LJ and glad for it.
A settings glitch is way softer than an "oops we pulled a Sony" glitch
It felt very much like someone handed this person a cuecard to read off of for something utterly BS.
's charge cards are being charged, it's still a big thing.
right, but people are being notified and coming together to make sure they aren't charged
unless your paid time expired TODAY, then there's time to fix it
There's been at least one report of someone getting a "being charged" notification for an account they couldn't recall the password for.
because it was 2 years expired.
then the onus is on LJ to provide a refund
if not a refund, then the wronged person could easily get a chargeback and force LJ to pay for it anyway
And if this charge puts someone over a balance, or under if the case of a debit card as an unexpected charge, it's still a majorproblem.
Which is why they really need to get someone on it ASAP.
It hasn't even been a day yet
[and to tell the userbase that they do have someone on it]
how fast does ASAP have to be?
If this was something affecting users for a week, then okay. Rage away
...they are working on it. I just read that thread, and there was at least one staff person (not the first person quoted) who said they are
Very. If this went through before 3pm today, the charge is going to cause problems.
It's not a rage. It's a worry.
A bank fee from a over draft charge is not easily refunded.
Mistakes are going to be made. Sometimes mistakes happen in public. It's how the mistakes are dealt with that counts
And right now it's too soon to know how they plan on handling it
Which is why any billing problem like this where charges are being processed without authorization needs to be instantly gotten to
Butting in here, I don't understand what is making you say that they aren't instantly working on it. Someone in the thread said that
they are working on the problem.
And trying to figure out what is causing this glitch/issue/thing
But if saying that they are working on it isn't good enough, then what is?
And the fact that the only staff reply that I saw was the "IDK," reply.
I mean...if it's a widespread error, they have to figur eout the root cause. That won't happen instantly.
I'd personally rather have the people who DO know busy working on fixing the things that went wrong
Leave the customer service to the interns
Fixing a problem takes time. Especially if it's a coding glitch or something like that. They have to find the thing that made it switch,
why it made it switch for only certain accounts, and then fix that.
That won't happen instantly. The only thing they CAN say is "we are looking into figuring out the root of this issue."
What else can they do, if saying "we are working on it" isn't good enoug?
That still doesn't mean they know the root cause the second people say "this is happening."
I mean, ideally they could just fix it instantly, but the reality is that it takes time to repair glitches. The best computer people in
the world can't fix a problem instantly.
However, what they can do is put all payments on hold until the error is found and fixed. Or at least in the short term.
This would insure that no charges go through without being authorized.
two of mine were! so yes, this is very legit.
That one person suggested that as a guess and then said the person should contact billing. There was nothing that sounded like blame in that
response, at least not the way I read it.
It sounded a lot more like "well, maybe it's this, but you should talk to the billing people."
yeah there is no way that this is at all okay LMFAO the least they could do is openly address it and tell us what's going on and what
they're doing about it, but they never do
ideally everyone who has a paid should be alerted to this b/c not everyone has plurk and not every can check the site every day
but overdraft charges aren't a laughing matter, and at this time of year??? what a shitty christmas present to find out you owe your bank
50$ for something you had no hand in
Yeah, it's a good thing I checked, my bank charges 38 dollars for overdraft fees and then 5 dollars a day after that
Billing wants to have people send in their emails confirming when they deactivated any given autopayment, so they can investigate
If folks have those, I suggest sending them in, as it's proof of the website acknowledging what you did -- and then reinstating
And if you've never had a paid, looking at account payment history is proof enough -- it tells you how you paid on there, generally
To search your inbox, look for "
[email protected]" as that's the email any such message would send out under
According to LJ, we're all liars who are trying to slander their services and spread panic.
Okay, at the very least, don't call your userbase lying, libeling, slandering folks. Note that it can be a "misunderstanding" and you're
"looking into it in order to solve what's going on"
Just... basic sense. Stop insulting your customers?
I doubt there's only one reason for these, either. Between myself and billing we more or less guess that it was a fuxup when I cancelled
the first time, of the process not sending right to the other end, and the people I talked with were perfectly civil and nonaccusatory
Yet I know folks talking to the same department being told to their faces they're lying, it's absolutely impossible in all ways for anything
like this to have happened at all?
I am so done with LJ at this point
thank god. just checked my accounts. no sign of autopayments '-'b
Checking my account history, it's wrong. There are 4 entries for a $0 charge on October 28th.
Something hit their payments database and scrambled it.
The fact that they're just shrugging it off is VERY concerning.
I feel it's also being conflated with the 88th release, when it's two separate things, so LJ is handling it in some respects as if it is
people simply overreacting to release 88, when the reality is this 'discovery' happens to coincide with people examining LJ more closely
in the wake of release 88
It's also happened for at least one Russian user, so it's really all over
