Cannot possibly be legal?
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן

the petition is sort of misleading
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
apparently the schools in question banning lgbtq students (or ones that act like it) are private/religious schools
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
so yeah, it's disgusting, but I sort of think it should be phrased... like... I don't know, cut this funding
I Am Immortal

Anduin: They are private schools that receive state funding.
I Am Immortal
It shouldn't be legal because they are receiving state funding.
I Am Immortal

Not just homosexual students, but also the children of homosexual couples.
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
right, and that's the problem that the petition should be addressing, but from what it looks like, all the petition says is very sparse
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
basically a rhetorical question
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
because of course schools receiving govt funding shouldn't be allowed to do that, but all it asks is "Do you think gay or lesbian students should be expelled from publicly-funded schools for who they are?"
✯ʎʇɹǝqıן
I just think it'd be more to the point if it actually mentioned the solution
I Am Immortal
Basically, if a private school wants to do this, it should not be getting funds from the states.

WTF?
I Am Immortal
I think the point is very clear. State funded schools are discriminating and banning students. The fact they are registered as private schools is a stupid loophole
I Am Immortal
The petition is that Georgia needs to stop giving them support.
I Am Immortal
Instead of trying to add more to the program.
what!
I live here in GA and this is the first time of me hearing about this
oh it's the private schools
but yeah this is still really freaking bad
if you get state money you can't be discriminatory like this
Kira🌵
Basically from the NYT article it looks like a bullshit workaround: people get tax deductions for giving money to a fund that provides scholarships to attend private schools
Kira🌵
So it might not technically be public money... it sounds like it'd be a nasty question legally.
Kira🌵
In terms of actual justice, though, fuck yes any school that's getting scholarship money sponsored by state programs shouldn't be discriminating.
I Am Immortal

That bit about a teacher being fired from one of these schools for supporting her OWN SON after he came out -- that's pretty awful.

Georgia and Arizona are racing very hard to be the most fucked up state in the US. ...part of me hopes they are even bothering to use loopholes.

I agree with those who have said the statement is misleading. The issue is about private religious schools that ban glbt students getting state funding, not about GLBT youth being banned from public schools.
Jingle Witch
I agree it's disgusting but churches and private institutions can be just as bigoted and disgusting as they want to be,
Jingle Witch
But, while the statement is completely misleading, I 100% agree that if they are going to ban students they should NOT get state funding.
