runeys is a silly name and we do not ten bajillion things called "spirits".

spirits are the vague life force thing in the earth, monsters are called "a kind of spirit", the rune things with faces are called "rune spirits", so on and so forth...

also it could be a cute sort-of-callback to harvest sprites from harvest moon

(and runeys being called different things in different places is canon anyways)
