Obj (object) is a pretty standard format for important files in to most programs.

so far, i have failed to import .dae files back into blender, but that might just be me... at least you can upload the meshes from the .dae files to SL under your own name

I've managed to import dae files to alter in blender, but doing much alteration can also affect the textures and such. But yes, possible.
