no idea how the dude worked it. I just made a Genius Bar appt and had my $99 ready. He said the even though the warranty didn't cover that kind of damage, he'd cover us anyway.

They sometimes do that, but no guarantees. They replaced one for my daughter that was slightly out of warranty.
