McCarthy knows diction like no other, his word choices stun because they're so surprising yet right

this is early McCarthy by the way, not nearly as sparse as his later works like No Country For Old Men (which I have read) and The Road (which I have not)

it takes nerve to never write a character's thoughts, and work only off what is shown and visible, the actions and dialogue
