In the movie, does Mako call Raleigh by name at the end, and is that the first time she does so?
I've been listening to the Audible version - the audiobook - recently, and I know it's based on the novelization. And I think She usually addresses him as 'Mr. Becket'.
But in Shoujo manga it's usually a big deal if someone uses your first name.
And Pacific Rim is heavily inspired by Kaiju movies, and Giant Robot series and anime and stuff.
I....actually think she doesn't use his given name on camera until the end.
Right. I'm suspecting that is the case.
It's big in shonen too, especially with male characters that have a backstory like hers.
Of course he says "Mako" all the time, but he's American.
Orphaned, angry, suspicious, slowly learning to trust the new partner; she has a stereotypical shonen hero arc.
She does.
It makes Raleigh a bit like the fangirl. Like, if he sang, or was royalty it'd be certain.
YUP.
And hey, the novelization reportedly has them sharing earphones and listening to music together!
Yes! They do share the earbuds. It's super kawaii, like in teen Korean dramas. Dream High.
( I dig on the novelization a lot except for the author's blatant push for Mako/Raleigh shipping. Which is fine! But I think that mentioning the UST so often is a little unnecessary )
Yeah, that's like the one thing I really didn't like about the novel. Especially the ending with the "been wanting to do that ever since she saw his scars" or whatever
They were already destined to be someone's ship without Irvine spelling it out, literally.
I can totally see Mako and Raleigh shipping, I just think using attraction as a one to one relationship with Drifting well together bugs me.
BUT. Enough of my opinions.
My idea is...that Irvine could have been a little more vague, and not suggested drift compatibility went along with physical attraction.
Then fandom could have suggested that on its own.
And I am finicky, I suppose. I prefer the idea that a male and female copilot so not have to have physical attraction in order to Drift well.
( Or female and female, or male and male, or what have you )
Where did I read about the 'modesty reflex'? I think it was on the wiki.
Basically attraction aside, if the conn-pod partners have hang-ups and embarrassment about sex, it'll interfere. So, I guess the Rangers just need to be cool with each other.
/agrees with all of that about the book
The modesty reflex thing came from the screenwriter's tumblr. He occasionally posts trivia that I wish he'd included in the movie, because Mako's dad being a swordmaker? IMPORTANT.
Makes sense. But yeah; one can have very deep and profound platonic love.
/so very happy I'm not the only one saying it
Like, you can just really get each other.
/totes going with the platonic love bond for Jr and Paige in Pacific Grid stuff
Though, as I say, shipping is totes okay. I can get on board with Raleigh and Mako shipping, too. Just don't like "omg they are HAWT for each other" at least once in a scene in most of the book.
I kinda do ship them, but I still like the movie treatment of the relationship.
I am pleased with how the book ( and the movie ) handle Raleigh's blatant fangirling though XD
"Dear diary, Mako-sempai
noticed metoday
"
this is a great plurk and I agree with most everything!
And Mako keeps just going "Hnn" /glare
