although there is a LOT of China, and just like you'd never get all of Italy in one trip, you're only going to touch on China. I second the vote for Xi'an. If you want a resort, try Hainan.

my personal list includes Pingyao (Shanxi) and Mount Tai.

I've been to Xi'an, you wouldn't regret seeing it.
