I had a guy run from a shooting hop the fence and hide in my back yard... and the police never came. I lost confidence in them and moved.

Apparently here, you just phone in the report. The nice lady who answered the phone was quite helpful when I called them

When i lived in Texas, I was hit by another car at a 4-way stop. The bike-cop came, handed us both a paper, and told us to send it in. He didn't seem to do any kind of report.
