Squall, on the other hand, is such an emotional disaster area that he really just doesn't care. He gloms onto the first person to show him unconditional human affection in terms he can understand.

In canon that turns out to be Rinoa, who is female, but I honestly don't think Squall's reaction would have been much different if, say, Rinoa had been male.
