because I can't click on anything when it's loading up to make it move off that promo video thing at the beginning. it freezes entirely and when I let it do its thing there's no menu for me to choose to play

For sims 2, the first time you load it is still technically part of the installation process. It has to add all of the neighbourhoods and cameras and stuff to your documents so the game is playable.

Make sure, even if it says it's not responding, to give it at least ten to fifteen minutes to do all that before you give it up as a lost cause.
