Working on organizing my short boxes and trimming my comic shop pull list and I've fallen into the "I love Animal Man" pit again.

Justice League United has so many great moments of Buddy Baker aggressively Dad-ing at people.

This is clearly a important use of interstellar communication.

He seems like he's five seconds from telling Sueprgirl he will turn this superhero team around.

The current run is by Jeff Lemire. It's very toned down from the Animal Man solo title since viscera doesn't sell well

but makes an interesting division between his actual power set and the power set he uses in public.

He's the friendly flying guy! Wacky electric eel powers. Unless you threaten a kid and he slips up and forgets to look human.

The 2011 Animal Man title is so gorgeous and grotesque.

I love his weird daughter so much. Maxine Baker, age four, loves dogs and casual necromancy.

This thought process of course led back to his lost in space road trip with Starfire and Adam Strange in 52.

On one hand I'm sad it isn't canon anymore, but on the other every writer outside of Morrison tried to make it sexual and fuck that.

Well in any case I'm picking up Justice League United to see what Jeff Parker does with the title. Pretty eager for that and Gotham Academy coming back.

Gotham Academy promises Damian Wayne: Fifth Grader which is the best idea the Bat comics have had in a decade.

I've been kind of out of the comics world for a while now, because the main titles I used to follow (lots of x-men shit, but also lots of other things too) went through so many artist/writer shifts, reboots,

retcons, circular storytelling where things never goddamn ENDED, that I got pretty frustrated and switched over to manga, where linear titles with at least the PROMISE of an eventual conclusion are the norm.

But ahhhh, this makes me miss Western comics so much! That skeleton cat and the intergalactic phone call are great, omg.

The new 52 reboot is a real mixed bag, but Animal Man is one of the characters that really benefited from it.

With the JSA mostly in Earth 2 Buddy got to become the surrogate dad of teen heroes in their place. It's been very enjoyable.

Not just teens, really. He's gets ton of dad jokes at Green Arrow as well.
