Apparently my roommate is moving
Just after I moved in
I think she tricked me into this from the beginning
I am in the area, I can ask around
Is it okay to replurk this? I don't think I know anyone in VA but someone else might :|a
I would also if it's okay
My apartment is really close to NOVA and George Mason, it's an amazing complex with a pool and a gym, and the price is around 850 plus utilities
you are close to me! haha
nowhere near there but replurking in case someone on my list is
:\ I would totally move in with you if you were in Philly that sounds great aha. but replurked!
I live in VA! Not looking myself but I can ask around
how much would it be for the new roomie per month?
I live out in Gainesville in Prince William County, near Manassas
And I used to live in Manassas! i had to live on the prince william GMU campus my first year
everyoneisemo: I think they mean per roommate. I thought $850 was the total, is that the two-way split?
in this area that has to be the two way split lmao
Haha cool! Yeah the GMU campus in prince william is right down the street from me
and yeah lol that's what I was afraid of
for the area though that's really not bad at all
we were paying almost twice that for a 1br in silver spring
I'm in Woodbridge I can look
I'm not looking, but it might help to say how close you are to the metro and what station.
Sorry, had to go to work! But yes, that's the price for the room (which is negotiable).
As for the metro, it's closest to the Vienna metro, and the distance is driveable, but there are buses that will take you there and there are bus stops right outside the complex.
oh man. I wouldn't actually mind moving there but thats way out of my budget
do you have pics of the apt or a similar apt in the same complex?
I replurked this, but I'm not close enough to being able to move out yet
August/September move-in would be best.
chromologue: How much lower would it need to be for you?
You guys are all amazing <3
i wasn't expecting to get any help with this at all so i'm so happy
unfortunately a lot. im on disability and $850 is just above my monthly check. but I understand that's the price if that area
Ugh yeah it's so crazy expensive. I accidentally went to the rich person's mall the other day and apparently it is not absolutely crazy to be spending $50 on a scarf on sale
Back home in WI my mom's two bedroom apartment is $750 total :|
this area is insane
lol I love the area and will actually be vacationing there next week but man the cost of living is ridic
I'm paying $600+utilities in falls church, and only because my roommate's friends own the place. it's a steal.
I'll replurk, too. I hope you can find a good roommate <3
I live in nyc and im just barely making rent here and I live in an actual shithole. I know the pain so well
I wouldn't mind living on campus if it were an option (since that can OCCASIONALLY be cheaper) but they don't do housing for grad students at the campus i actually go to
Yeaah I got lucky with my place being in a cheap condo complex.
replurking this for visibility! Have you considered talking to your department people to see if they can get the word out if there's other grad students looking for housing?
That could help, since they'd be people in the area
yeah good idea, my school had a housing flyer and that's how my roommate found me
that was after my other potential roommate bailed on me too
yeah and this is a good time of year to ask! Since I'm sure they are talking with prospective students looking to come into the area for the school year
I sent an email out to the listserv for my department, yes! So hopefully that helps. I've started looking at the off-campus housing website (which has roommate listings) and sent emails
And one girl contacted me so far!
Nothing too solid but I'm feeling a lot less WELL FUCK than before so it's good.
Thank you guys so much <3
Man. I used to live there. :x Just moved to Texas.
move back and be my roommate obvs that's reasonable
Man, too far from me, and everybody I know in RL that lives in Virginia has their own place. Replurked, though
Also, damn that rent is high
/quietly When I lived in Fairfax, mine was 1398/mo.
Yeah, it's pretty insane.
Yeah like seriously it looks bad to someone outside the area but I'd hate to make it more difficult by giving the impression that she's asking something unreasonable. That's a steal for around here.
Yeah the only people I know who are paying less are in tiny rooms in group situations with not enough bathrooms.
our 1BR in silver spring was like $1500 and it was a cheap ass building with mold on the vents and occasional pest issues
Mine was a 1br, kitchen, livingroom, 1bath, 500sq ft
Good location, but still expensive
idek what the upstairs neighbors were up to. I'd hear thudding and scraping, running, at like 10pm-2am for like weeks. Had to complain. ;/ But besides a busted water heater, that was about it in 3yrs.
It deffo sucked, I get up at 4:40am for work.
ours was a recently built building so it LOOKED nice but the more you lived in it you realized how cheaply it was made, and we were lured into it
we were on the 16th floor and we asked the manager, does it get hot in the summer "EH not really"
(bullshit, there was always that period before they were even allowed to turn AC on so that the lower floors could stay warm at night, and it was sweltering)
and I asked, "i'm a professional opera singer and i'll need to practice, are the walls thin, will i need to worry" "NAH you can be as loud as you want!!"
(also bullshit, if I can hear the couple next door's conversation and them banging at 8AM on a saturday morning I think they can hear me since I'm trained to sing w/o a mic over a full orchestra)
ugh. I had a coworker move into a gorgeous building only to find out it was cheap as hell. Same deal with the walls.
Yeah, anything built recently is basically cheap as fuck built to minimum building codes that are worthless
man, i hope you find something. And i hope your neighbors are cool
I'm actually really happy with this apartment and complex-- nothing's been cheap-seeming and the ppl in the office are pretty great. But that might be why it's more expensive.
I wish I had the budget for this, but alas. Fuck housing prices here.
I'm willing to split things so it'd be lower for you, but I know that might still not be enough. ;;
(Also wow there's lots of people in the area on plurk o
...yeah. That's about right.
Here's hoping you get a cool roomie.
Well I've got like 6 other locals on my plurk list.
yeah, I'm stuck living at home and commuting to GMU since wow the cost of living here is nuts.
Yeaaah I live in Leesburg and got one of the last "affordable" condos around.
Like my neighbors basically never move out and those that do rent their condo because they can make tons of money on it.
crossfortune: What are you studying? I'm going for an MA in lit
Ahh cool! Humanities bros.
replurking in solidarity because i feel the housing pain
it takes me 2 hours to commute to work because it's so hard to find a place that doesnt charge like. extortionate rent, where i work in the SF Bay Area...
Good luck!
It's the woooorssst. Thank you for the replurk!
SO TERRIBLE and so disheartening when even splitting with roomies the prices are still sometimes too high
Yeah :c I can make the split better for other people but it's a little frustrating given the fact that I don't even want the bigger room.
(And I can only do a bigger split because I'm a TA and I'm getting loans...)
Bumping in light of recent BS.
I'm in the area and dealt with a similar situation-- might've been able to help if this was maybe 2 months ago. ): Good luck!
awww man, i definitely feel your pain! if i was in the area and not broke myself id definitely be your roomie, but unfortunately im living in a camper in Sweden since theres no affordable housing anywhere even
close to my school xD unless i live in a "collective" which is like. a million people and one bathroom, ugh xD but i'll definitely replurk if you still need it, just lemme know! <3
ahhh thank you! replurking has definitely been helpful.
<3 no problem! all the luck, sweetie, i know it's tough but i bet something will come up soon! there have to be a lot of grad students looking for rooms
Bumping this just to be safe since one of my options just told me no
/punches the universe for you, yo
I'm coming home tomorrow and will be able to better answer you then!
Chatvert: ahhh okay! sorry for text pestering you ;o;
No worries! Been dealing with phone charging issues out here. ;;
oh gosh, if i didn't just get a job outside baltimore with my gf i might have been able to help (i'm from springfield!). I know a lot of people in the area still though, so i'll replurk this!
