So I've been given the opportunity to go anywhere in the world for a week this year. My thoughts are on Greece or Hawaii. Where would you go?

if someone else is paying I'd go the most far out place that I normally would find it hard to afford. Maybe Japan or Africa

Getting to Hawaii or Europe is pretty easy from where I am..moneywise anyways

this would probably not be the year i'd go to greece with all that kerfluffle, i'd wait a year until they've sorted out how all of that is going to work

a week is a pretty short period of time, you'll probably end up still jetlagged for a fair bit of it, unfortunately. (i would see if i could work out a way to extend it at least a week!)

and my answer to your original question is "everywhere"

japan is great. you could pack a lot into a small amount of time staying in tokyo, there is a huge variety of things to do.

I agree with Evangeline, go someplace that's really hard to get to. I'd probably hit up the South Pacific. Fiji looks like paradise, but my god the flights are expensive.

Go to Greece!

That's what I figured about Greece right now, its beautiful and in desperate need of money (not that 2 people taking a trip is helping much) and I don't think people will be protesting/rioting at a resort lol.

Japan would be fun too! I like the idea of going everywhere haha, if only!! I'm a little worried about getting from the airport to the resort though, for Greece. Also, sight seeing... it could be a problem.

Allegory: Darn it, you made me think lol.

as long as you stay away from the parliament and such, you should be fine in greece

only thing i'd recommend is taking cash with you, especially small denomination bills
Allegory says

jackalennui: yeah, my main point is that the GETTING cash while you're there situation might be a bit rocky, though by the time she's going it might be fine. being alone and not knowing people to rely on if

something does go wrong with being able to get money and whatnot makes things a bit more complicated

greece IS beautiful, and you'd probably be fine. since it's just a week, you'll want to pick one place with easy access to things you want to see, instead of spending as much time traveling from place to place
Allegory says

(which is what i have done, i spend a couple of days in one place and then move somewhere else and travel around a country- but i try to stay for 3-4 weeks)

it was sort of weird and inconvenient due to things being closed and dudes all over the place with automatic weaponry, but i didn't even have much trouble being in thailand during a coup, mostly people are very

cool about tourists and you generally do ok even when things get a little weird

greek banks opened again on july 20th, and it looks like the game of chicken between the greek government and european institutions is finished, for now at least (LOL)

but who knows what they will come up with next
Allegory says

yeeeah, and it might be a little messy to be there in the middle of the NEXT game of chicken! though really, as long as you prepare for it, it shouldn't be a big deal anyway

yeah i just read in the papers today that there might be new elections sometime soon ... oh well
