he pretty much managed himself out of a job. Which is, BTW, the job of a good leader. The problem was that in a growing company, there's always something new for a manger to shift to doing.
transitioned technical leadership to a dev under him, removed unnecessary process, helped make things run themselves... so there wasn't anything else to do with that product.
