I have to quibble with the first quote. Maybe he speaking hyperbole. E.g. saying I am Filipino doesnt dehumanize me. Humans are individuals, yes, but also social creatures.

He seems to be trivializing culture, ethnicity, religion. I wouldnt go that far. When people are willing to kill and die for culture, ethnicity, religion, to trivialize these matters is to deny reality.

The context is that he belongs to a grouped that is being collectivized (and dehumanized)

The problem isn't collectivizing him under the general rubric of "Muslim". The problem is the conflation of "Muslim" with undesirability.

pandapanda you're right, he skipped a step there, although operationally it works out the same as far as he is concerned
