This is what I am doing right now. .
A piece of fabric is 68" long. I need it cut almost in half. One piece is 2" longer than the other. How long is each piece.
x+y=68
x=y+2
(y+2) +y=68
2y +2 =68
2y=66
y=33

x=35
two pieces one at 33, the other at 35,
perfect.

Or the way I did it, 68/2=34. 2/2=1. 34+1=35, 34-1=33.

Why not just fold the fabric in two, mark the half, and then mark and cut at 2" beyond that? Or am I missing something in your description?

b... half the fabric is 34, if you move over 2" you would be at 36, and the other piece would be 32.
