....oh, nice KQ6 callback there.
Hiss at the evil wizards.
Nuuuuuuuuuuu sad ending.
Does this mean Rosella is going to be the official heir, though?
Well, this was our most puzzleriffic chapter yet. Like, honestly, all puzzles and no choosing between routes.
ClaireKI77y, (I assume after you've played through yourself), but I want your thoughts.
I AM REALLY, REALLY HAPPY WE GOT TO SEE THE TWINS, FINALLY. Incredibly disappointed that Cassima and Edgar remain pretty much just namedrops, though.
Like, not only were they not present during the family dinner scene, there were no places set for them. What is up with that?
OK, so, testing a second playthrough, and I am getting Very Concerned about Edgar's place in all this. Because said dinner table scene? The main conversation is about who's likely to inherit the crown.
Gart, who's, like, 12, clearly believes he's the heir apparent. As in, upon Graham's death, he becomes king. And I'm just like, "what about ur dad, Gart?"
Edgar's name never comes up, not even once.
OK, sure, assuming Edgar finally got a "yes" on Proposal Number 3, he's prince-consort, doesn't otherwise have a blood tie to the Daventry throne and isn't native to Daventry, but... neither was Graham.
(According to this, anyway--the original games had Graham as a Daventry native)
It is true that Graham's situation was kind of unique in that his predecessor, King Edward, had no children to pass the crown to, and there's probably a rule about that.
Something like it can only pass to someone like that if the current ruler has no male children to inherit. But... Graham doesn't. Alexander abdicates his role as Daventry's future king to rule the Green Isles
Edgar would still make the next logical choice, unless we get into fun dynastic rules that would still put Gart ahead of him by virtue of Gart being the next direct-bloodline descendant.
Now, end of Chapter 4, Graham is changing the rules so that the crown can pass to either gender, not just the next male in line, which sets up Rosella to inherit.
Which... theoretically, still puts Edgar as the next king-by-marriage (even if "King" may not be his technical title).
It is possible that Edgar may not want the position and has voluntarily stepped out of the line of succession. Or, perhaps, circumstances have made him the ruler of some part of Eldritch.
His life expectancy might play a role too, because there are 3 possibilities: 1) he's immortal, can't die naturally, which will fuck up the natural order of inheritance.
Or, IDK, maybe Daventry has rules against nonhumans being in power
2) He has the life expectancy of a cat, because that's where the Extra Life that saves him comes from... which would probably mean he's already dead. Again.
Or... maybe somehow artificially kept alive through fairy magic or cutting deals with the Fates (who are his aunts, or something), or some similar magical wackiness.
or 3) he has a normal, human life expectancy because Genesta is a Secret Bitch who, in addition to changing his appearance without his consent also turned him mortal.
I still think Genesta is actually fucking with Edgar on purpose in the ending of KQ4, probably because she can't take revenge on Lolotte personally because Lolotte is dead
Whatever the case may be (and maybe Chapter 5 will explain it), Edgar is conspicuously missing from this conversation and he should be part of it.
It's also possible Rosella may have convinced Edgar to stay out of it. Gwendolyn asks why Graham didn't just make Rosella the heir (despite there being a law on the books than only men inherit).
Graham answers that "she was always having adventures with Edgar. Then she had Gart and was more interested in training him to be king."
...something about the way this is worded seems... weird. It's she, not they.
Which, ok, yes, Rosella was the one who gave birth but... I side-eye the lack of agency afforded Edgar in that statement.
Maybe Edgar's been busy in Etheria trying to keep greedy faeries from getting anywhere near his son
