That's sad, really. And that is why things may go boom if they get any worse. Someone who has nothing left to lose...
I have always had one quibble about the Milgram experiment she mentions. It gets brought up a lot in Psych classes along with Stanford. I think Milgram found what he was looking for, but failed to recognize the other motivations for how his subjects reacted.
Can you imagine how personally terrifying it would be to find yourself in that situation? Someone is doing horrible things to people without any evidence of fear of the consequences. And is INSISTING that you MUST participate. I am not seeing simple obedience. I am seeing terror of becoming the person being shocked.
Why would you not assume that your life and health are in as much danger as the person being electrocuted? You are not demonstrating obedience to authority, you are demonstrating terror of pain and death to yourself at the hands of someone who can do such things without apparent consequences. You are surviving.
It is certainly more noble to have the bravery to refuse to harm our fellow man in those circumstances. But it is also rather unfair to those who endured being subjects to pass them off as simply being obedient. I saw a quote some time ago that is another over-generalization but does make one think. "No heroes survived the concentration camps"
You make a lot of sense, there. I must agree with you.
“The distance between the main employer, the company that hires the temp agency, and the worker who fulfills these gigs, allows for the same type of casual cruelty that is exchanged between people who meet on online dating apps.”
