i think prob the realization that helped me most starting off is that like, you can't really screw anything up? i was always really fussed about like not wanting to accidentally box myself in or w/e but there's not much you can do that can't be fixed or made up for if you realize whoops i maybe shouldn't have done that

that said choosing your ambition will determine your like Greater Goal through the game so that's an important decision but like, the game will tell you if you're about to do something Significant

but if you want advice or tips or anything please lmk!!! happy to help since it can be kind of a weird game to wrap your head around at first

it IS a bit of a weird game and ngl puttering around without money but like TONS of resources was bad for my grinding/hoarding playstyle

but i ended up just being like “okay i’m playing as this oc now what would they do?” and it turns out that they would be a useless fop who steals anything not tied down

that being said.... i guess my only Concern at the moment is when to spring for better housing?? i want more cardspace uou

i added u!!! and honestly like, springing for better housing is something i did p much right away HAHA just for my personal pref? so if you want more cards, by all means, go for it

i also honestly bought a lot of diff types of housing just bc you get diff cards depending on which places you live LOL

and then with the cards, you can kinda check that stuff in game? sec i'll take some screenshots

oh rip i'm actually dead rn so the cards i'm getting are not suited for this tutorial HAHA but if you mouse over a card without clicking on it, a little thing should pop up that will sometimes explain how you unlocked the card? like "you're seeing this bc you have dangerous 30 and x other thing" or w/e

and then once you click on the card, there's a lil thing you can mouse over too that tells you how rare the card is?

it's a lil "i" icon in the upper right corner

so that will kind of give you an idea of how often the card pops up

okay so i should hold onto rarer cards and i can just yeet common cards

BUT as a general rule, cards with white borders are pretty basic and cards with gold borders are like More Special and sometimes have bigger stories attached to them or w/e, same goes for diff options in the diff locations

it'll be a pretty legendary smash if not the best smash newt's ever participated in

but yeah i think like, as is maybe evident here, the game is incredibly open world in that you pretty much just make your own goals based on what you feel like accomplishing since sometimes you'll hit parts of like your ambition storyline or w/e that are just REALLY tough to make progress in

like, building a zubmarine for example is ludicrously expensive so it's absolutely a stretch goal now and i'm mostly just kind of dicking around doing smaller storylines to vaguely raise funds for zub time

which is why playing as a character is gr8 bc it's easier to have those side goals that keep the game interesting as you're climbing a mountain for the next part of your story

!! yeah, like playing just to max things isn't the greatest fun, and there are so many choices that characterize your character so well that i felt like it was better to go in as someone else

if i were playing as myself i'd just be like................ i cannot possibly fucking decide on something interesting

gamerz rise up and start making more precise wording for new genres, like games where winning isn't the point

listening to friends at the table and how they approach games taught me that there's an entire world of folks out there who are doing some really cool things with narrative storytelling rather than straight dnd and it's been eyeopening

narrative... storytelling.... like that isn't just telling a story LIKE randomized storytelling within the context of a game

it's very good praxis at that end of game theory

god yes, i love that shit and it's super fun once you're able to like... kinda shake off the expectations of playing games not like that HAHA which can be a lil tough but once you like, idk get into the right headspace it's super great

on f@tt they played a game called the fall of magic where you and a bunch of people are on a quest to save magic and it's incredibly open ended? there's a bit of randomness added but like you're just sitting in a room w ur friends and creating a fable and there's no winning or losing it's just... what happens

and it's very good it was one of the best things they did imo

it made me realize that i really missed that end of rping - like i love the game aspect and the grind too, but having characters like, talk to each other? that spark of randomness within the context of storytelling that you can't get in a solo fanfiction experience? hmmmMMMMM GOOD

that kind of storytelling was also part of the itn inspo since we very much wanted to create a world where like, you have options and a ton of room for taking the story in whatever direction but ultimately it wasn't really about "defeat the world eaters" or doing things right or wrong, it was just meant to be about character choices and like...

how characters spend their time and make something worthwhile under adverse conditions or w/e

it is EXTREMELY procedural rpg playing, and they stick to the dice really firmly and talk about the type of narratives they want to make for hours sometimes

oh shit cool, good to know going in but i can get into that sorta thing

yeah, i really enjoy it but i do confess that i had more fun w the podcast bc i was actively learning the systems they were playing and trying to figure out what kinds of narrative mechanics they were using to make decisions and push the plot forward

also they stop for like 20 minutes at a time bc they keep getting distracted by googling images of cute animals and that's genuinely very fun

if you want to start on a fantasy vibe they suggest starting on their marielda season, but if you like sci fi, i'd actually suggest counterweight? it's a bit awkward but after the first campaign they switch systems and introduce lazer ted who is literally the best npc they have ever created

anyway.... enough game talk i think i need to actually play games or else i'm not spending my sunday right
