hello everyone, my name is marzi and i need help with translating symptoms of covid into languages commonly spoken in my area. so please feel free to reply or replurk or even pplurk if you prefer!

i'm working in a facility that has family visitors come by, but not all of them speak english and unfortunately the forms given to us by the government are only in english

the languages i'm looking for specifically are:

Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Korean

the description of symptoms needed are:

Fever or sweats
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite/nausea
Fatigue, muscle aches, or weakness
Loss of taste or smell
Runny nose or congestion
Headache
Sore throat/Painful swallowing

i mean ideally i also have 4 more screening questions, related to leaving the country, being tested for covid recently, etc- but these symptoms are kindof the most essential at the moment and i don't just wanna rely on google translate

(written cantonese and mandarin are the same)

i've used google translate in a really limited way to communicate with chinese immigrants at the food pantry i volunteer at

it's good for single, unambiguous words but it mangles sentences and anything that might have multiple meanings and you got the wrong one

yeah actually now that i think about it, my guy wouldn't be very helpful with written chinese. he can speak it fluently but he doesn't read the characters so WELP

so I sent it to my friend, she says her mom works in health nonprofit in AB and will likely have more "official" translations, i'll keep you posted but it might not be until later today or tomorrow

thank you all so much. i was so surprised that my health authority didn't have any translations available for these forms at all. i mean i've used google translate with clients before too. but i also need to be asking things like hey have you left the country at all including going to the united states in the last 14 days

i really appreciate everyone's willingness to share this. a lot of our clients are hard of hearing as well so visuals have been kindof our best option

do you think contacting the relevant countries' embassies/consulates might help?

it also has info in large print and Easy Read. and if your patients are culturally HoH, I just googled BSL covid information and SignHealth has BSL videos about covid used by govt sources

i wanted to say thank you again to everyone who reached out to help! the population we serve is elderly and also multicultural and the visitors who come to the site are also usually elderly and multicultural. our intention is to take the translations you've so generously provided and to print them in large font as a visual aid for our non-english speakers
