Trigger warning: Graphic depiction of sexual assault.
I can hear a cousin of mine leading a tabletop session and they just?? Sprung a sudden rape plot on their players????
I'm legit poking my head out through the door of my bedroom to better hear them since I'm pretty close to the 'game room' that we have for stuff like this or board games and the deafening silence during their narration compared to the boisterous and noisy talk and chatter in the fight before the sudden plot reveal.
I know one of the players who is playing in this session and I know this is a major trigger of theirs. One they wouldn't want to confront during a game or something so I'm just pure !!!???!!! at this entire stuff.
Like I am not kidding - Graphic descriptions of how there are cuts and bruises on certain parts of the NPC body and detailed depictions of the victim having panic attacks and nightmares and making constant mentions of how the victim is 'broken' and 'ruined' from this.
Hrrrnrgh. Someone finally went, 'Really???' since the victim is 'reduced to babyspeak' and the response they got was, 'Rape was used in war to break female captives' and I'm trying not to scream.
Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
They REALLY WENT for ~~DARK AND EDGY~~~~ bullshit huh
The group has a rule of not using phones when in a session but I know the player I'm worried about does keep it on the side due to work stuff. I'm going to send a message in a bit and ask if they want to chat.
schematise: THIS IS WHAT CONFUSES ME THE MOST?? It was political fantasy up until this point????
Like mainly negotiations and sleuthing out spies and suddenly this happens. I'm trying to figure out how this came to be because, last time I checked, they were investigating an embezzlement magic ring or something.
that makes it worse, that makes me imagine that he's snuck in a nasty trafficking plot or something
man, this is SO weird and not a good surprise at all
planetbefall:
Right. I opened my door at that moment of the narration just to let out the smell of stale air and medicine stuff and I overhear the description of them coming across the NPC and it was Yikes All the Way Down from there.
schematise: I am legit still trying to figure out what this will lead to because it is such a swerve from what I know of this session so far.
They're doing Q&A and Feedback since the session is over - a requirement for this tabletop group - but most players (usually chatty) are saying it's all good and are immediately logging off or idling. It includes the player I'm worried for so I think I'll be going dark myself for an hour or so to speak with them.
Hopefully they... do say something if they're uncomfortable
in private if not........ yknow in the group
too often is shit like this kept quiet for the sake of not stirring the pot but like
no stir that pot, call that out
straight up if a dm pulled this on me I'd walk the fuck out
I doubt the players (not just the one you're worried about) are okay with this, they should probably confront it as a group if possible
please rip your cousin a new asshole, what the fuck
Hey guys! Sorry. I went to bed at around 6 AM trying to help with this issue and woke up at around 4 PM so I am a little foggy still so sorry—
I spoke with the player who I was worried for. They admit they stopped listening altogether at the end because it upset them a lot. I encouraged them to speak with the players they trusted and I helped write a DM they can - a casual ‘Hey! Could I get your thoughts on what happened?’ thing. Haven’t heard back on that but I hope it goes well.
I tried to speak with my cousin. It did not go well. They got defensive when I tried to ask if they had warned players of the content beforehand. They said it would have ruined the surprise. They then got mad when I suggested a signal/word then if it got too intense because it doesn't feel fair to do that to those who aren't prepared to have that sprung up.
It, more or less, devolved into a one-sided fight. They were yelling at me through my bedroom door (while hitting it) and said I shouldn’t get involved in stuff I don’t know the full story of. I was trying to explain (without mentioning the player since they should say their piece) that it wouldn’t hurt to consider the players’ reactions to this beforehand.
Our family ended up getting involved since the yelling woke them up (it is the AM at the point, you guys) and the shouting got louder after that. They ended up yelling at the cousin for yelling at me since I’m under some circumstances right now.
They said some pretty nasty words in reply to that - I don't want to go into details about this, sorry for the vagueness - and it resulted in them getting sent to their room. Their stuff is confiscated for the week and their internet use is being monitored now.
On my end I was scolded by our family for ‘sticking [my] nose in something [I’m] not involved in’ and told me the people I was worried for can handle themselves. They mainly came to my defense since they heard/saw I was trying to remain calm during the kinda fight and due to the circumnstances I'm in.
okay but i'm glad you did??? because nobody speaking up would mean that was going to get so much worse
but i am so sorry that the situation escalated like that
Me too on both fronts, honestly. I've been focusing on deep cleaning my room and organizing my stuff for most of the day because the house is in an obvious Awkward State. I hope the others in the tabletop group can gather together and talk this out and have a better chance speaking with my cousin on this.
your cousin is. something.
I don't know anything else about them but from this alone I want to huck them off a pier
that's some deep yikes stuff
I hope the other players can make your cousin see sense
and I hope you can get a little peace from the chaos
KabochaKitsune: You are not alone on that. A friend of mine real-life, J, does not like them after the first and last terrible encounter with them when she visited me once. She's telling me to stick to my guns when I inevitably have our family members ask me to not hold this against them and accept the apology when it comes.
schematise: Thank you and I hope so too for them. They've been roleplaying with my cousin since the pandemic and I think this is the second/third time DM'ing so I hope the players can address this better than I did and get them to see the problems with this.
Just because you share a bit of blood doesn't mean you should have to put up with that level of awfulness
in my experience people.......... getting defensive when this stuff is bought up isn't unusual. People hate the sensation they did Something Bad feel embarrassed and so get all stupid about it. If you're LUCKY when he cools off he might be able to think it through, but there's also a chance that because HE isn't sensitive to that stuff he just straight ....
won't be able to rationalise how other people cannot just Get Over It
normally I'd agree wrt getting defensive when Doing Wrong, but banging on the door and screaming in the AM is more then past that point imo
lmao I mean I am not trying to excuse it
Obviously this guy is a jerk
oh no i didn't think you were
hey if that's your response to being told to knock something off, Boy Howdy Do You Have A Deeper Problem
For sure, but that aint my remit
