[Discworld] a lot about The Watch BBC is alarmingly misjudged as an adaptation but the thing I keep coming back to, which is emblematic of the whole thing, is that the scary female crime boss who tries to murder Vimes with her 'bitches' is supposed to be CMOT Dibbler

a lot of the other weirdness i can brush of as 'well it's an adaptation' like the corrupt drunk Vimes and skinny girlboss terrorist Lady Sybil

what
but something about this one part, which isn't even mentioned in the show itself (just in the credits, although Vimes once refers to her as 'Throat') is just beyond belief for me

the omission of Nobby is also a serious problem
but nothing quite as bad as this

I could have lived with "here's a weird twist inspired by the books"

but I couldn't live with thinwashed Sybil
this thread is making me cry
'see how much more interesting it is to HIRE DISABLED WOMEN'
1) yeah let's stick it to that toxic old male bigot (checks notes) terry pratchett
2) i literally would not care if you hired a disabled woman to play a sleazy pie salesman
what is breaking my brain is that you made her into a generic gang boss whose only real point of interest is that she's a disabled woman
BBC!!!!!!!!!!!!
i absolutely guarantee you this person has not read the books and if she did, didn't get them
dibbler in the show never even says 'cutting me own throat'. come ON. you could have done one thing
Lizblackdog it's literally only because of how good the Sybil actress is in the part that I can even forgive it as a casting choice, seriously
but yes it is fucking insufferable that they cast Sybil as a skinny black lady ('look at how inclusive we're being NO FAT CHICKS THOUGH!!!!') and then made her an armed vigilante (with the obvious feeling that they're using the actress's race to launder what's an extreme character change)
it's not Sybil. But it's not Vimes either
so it's hard to care that much
however i find the reimagining of Dibbler, while a much more minor part of the show, just baffling
the stuff with Carrot and Cheery is kind of fumbled but in the sense where they were stuck with the impossibility of finding a little person who is also a trans woman and a good enough actor to be in a TV show - it's bad but i'm not mad at it
