We just discussed a book, The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution, by Dan Hicks.
So now we need a movie, which we'll meet to discuss in late September or early October, and a book, which we'll discuss approximately thirty days after the movie.
We want to pick the book now so that we'll have two month to read it.
ALSO: The League of Extraordinary Dorks welcomes new members. That weirdo you just met may be our new best friend. Invite them!
My pick for movie is Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I know some of us have seen it, but some of us haven't. And we haven't talked about it!
that is true, the weirdo might be our new best friend
isn't that how we all met?
I second Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Would love to watch it again and talk to you about it!m
I’m commenting so I get the responses.
I third POALOF! I'd love the excuse to watch it again
I read a book this summer called The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline. It’s fictional, but based on research she did about the “deportation” of female prisoners to Australia in the 19th century.
The Exiles
WOOT! I THINK WE HAVE A SOLID BOOK SUGGESTION!
These both sound good to me; I’ve been meaning to watch that movie anyway
I have a couple of book suggestions but I will wait a while because they are new and I don't want to make anyone buy a hardcover... maybe in a bit they'd be more available through our libraries at least
I can rent the movie from amazon us, so works for me.
I have another book recommendation! I just finished this one and REALLY liked it! It's translated from Swedish.
Keep that in your pocket! I think we're settled on The Exiles, but we'll need another book before you know it.
This is a good time to remind everyone to get reading! (See above for a link to
The Exiles.) One of the benefits of alternating books and movies is that we get more time to read
I checked it out as an audiobook from my library!
AlannaRobbiani: excellent! I actually own a copy of Anxious People but haven't read it yet!!
jaysus, i'm 134th on the library wait list for The Exiles wtf lol
see you in a few years for some very delayed discussion
ilovemesomesharks: it's on hoopla if you have that through your library and you have credits left! no wait that way
i only see the audiobook on hoopla. superlibrarian alanna is helping me though I WILL GET THERE, DAMN IT
lol well, somehow, the book became available to me yesterday. i dunno what happened to those 133 people ahead of me
I'm on a waitlist for The Exiles, but if I don't get it soon enough, I'll pick up a copy.
misscat: I really had nothing to do with it!
MaudelineKranfel: we are probably going to discuss this in early November, does that give you enough time to wait for the library copy? does it give you an estimate wait time?
misscat It said 6 weeks, but it's possible I'll get notified before then. I'll give it til mid-october.
I walk dogs for a living these days, so I found the audiobook at my library and realized hey, I can read it in a timely fashion!
Way to go! I tend to tune out audiobooks. I need to work on that.
I got better at them once I got into podcasts and activities that don't require thought
checking on the status of your (our lol) reading!
would you all be ready to meet this weekend (November 6 for all except for
pruememo)? or should we shoot for next weekend on November 13 (Sunday morning for
pruememo)?
most importantly, is
AlannaRobbiani available because it was her pick? we want to hear thoughts!
I have been listening to the audiobook on my walks with June Bug
I can do either date
I'm voting for next weekend, the 13th, but I can do either one.
Either is fine with me, but I'd Prefer Prueday
Haha Prueday. Make this a global holiday! 13/14 is best for me.
So it’s The Exiles on Nov 6 or 13? I think I’m available either day.
AlannaRobbiani: excellent! I think more people prefer the 13th so let's goj with that
we've been doing 2 pm SLT time so that our Europeans can join us in their late night and Prue can join us in her Sunday morning - it's the only time we're all awake
Um, my viewer is out of date. I meant to update this weekend but didn’t get around to it. I’ll try to make that happen before Saturday. Fingers crossed!
AlannaRobbiani: I'm really enjoying the book, thanks for the pick, Alanna!
AlannaRobbiani If you start downloading now you might have the updated viewer installed in time!
PollyPaperclip: I know, right? Hopefully I will remember on Thursday or Friday night to start it.
