I'm at the season 2 finale watching Max Evans solve his problems by creating bigger problems

season 3 and LOL we're in the pandemic

lots of scenes with only 2 people in them

characters have reasons to be in different states

putting this down two episodes into season 3 but also registered "heartproblem" for Max because there's enough layers in that to make it fun

macho cop writes sensitive poetry and has the power to heal at the cost of himself but his selflessness has given him a physical limitation in a failing heart

and then all the pining for his girl stuff

there's a lot of room for shit to go intense and bad and when I was looking up when this stuff actually aired I saw that there was a HARD decline in ratings at the middle of this season so SOMETHING happens

I think that like?

the first two seasons were SO tight and cohesive

it feels like that was one entire story that ran its course in a natural way

and my concern is that it could be at the point of overstaying its welcome

but also LOL looking for icons are like "hahaha no but we got michael and alex" so I was like "ugh are there at least screencaps so I can be lazy about that" and the capseroo entry for max is SO SALTY

I ended up just not watching the end of AoS because every time I turn it on it's also a hunt for faces to cap for icons

man, thinking about this? I actually see a lot of parallels between Jones' life choices and Max's

Jones was faced with perpetual slavery to a dictator and being used as a tool of a regime and put his head down and did what he was told

and that's really close to Max being like "we're exceptional but the stakes are really high so let's just do our best to stay as anonymous as possible"

and it stayed that way until he crossed a point where he couldn't let his anonymity stay a barrier to the his own exceptionalism

and Jones was happy to be silent and enslaved until he encountered the proof that the world was about to it all again to a miniature version of himself

in roswell's defense, it did evil twins decades before TVD existed lol

I thought the TVD books and the Roswell books came out at the same time?

OKAY season 3 down and EH it wasn't as awful as I thought it might be

bog standard evil twin stuff, even hit the "I can't tell which is the good one D:" note in the finale

still feels like everything after s2 was pretty superfluous and now that Max's loose ends are wrapped it feels like these characters are even MORE settled

I don't think "oh no another alien" as a cliffhanger is enough of a tease to make it feel like we should come back to spend more time with these people and I'm worried about them overstaying their welcome

Isobel's already kind of like "ok glad you had your girl power moment but sometimes this story forgets to include you"

"she's kissing girls now!" isn't character development we're like 20 years past katy perry

it's got that CW problem where it's focusing on the ships and forgetting that people care about ships because they care about the characters, not just the nubile bodies slapping together

these boys, finally having a chance to be Brothers

season 4 is A Slog but I am inching through

Michael's "I'm cured now" era is kind of grating but I guess it leaves him open to be more of The Protagonist, which seems to be where this season wants him to be

what with the kidnapped boyfriend in the early episodes who will probably come back in the later end of the season as The Problem

but it's also just digging into a bunch of TVD tropes that should have stayed dead

we did the "scary monster in front of a car, actually the villain kidnaps the good guy" thing, and now we're basically just doing Travelers again

and it wasn't good the first time
