I just??? want to have a regular, unremarkable semester???
"here's a missive about why I didn't value the work I owed you" legitimately not my problem, friend
I love the bit how the other classes are super easy.
I can't even parse what kind of emotional labor I'm being expected to perform
I think that this one might be intensely anxious but in a way that reads as rude and hostile
he's written some spicy emails to me already
but I don't think he's aware of how spicy they are
why is retaining information in brackets
does he think you don't know what studying is?
well, see, I'm a woman so I need these concepts explained to me in small words
....................I'm sorry, is this meant to be a plea for leniency bc it reads as "I don't care about your class and might not bother to do it" which. Okay. Enjoy flunking, then????
the weird thing is that he has about 0 reading comprehension? I've received like one piece of homework from him and he did it wrong
and I don't think he understood me when I told him what was wrong about it
is that weird, reading this letter feels like every non-apology I've ever seen in one document
I don't think comprehension is a strong point here
I imagine, to him, it's like I have admitted this "failing" and that makes me a good person in their ways sort of backwards logic
we had this exchange through email like two weeks ago
and THEN omg the presentation he's complaining about! So it was their presentation day and I knew they were feeling kind of shaky because the three of them had been fighting (bc the dude was an asshole to both of his groupmates - refused to meet with them in person, behaved like this over text exchanges)
and so I just blithely go overlong with my lecture stretching things out so that they don't have to worry about filling their full presentation time
and before I can go over, he stands up and goes "PROFESSOR. ISN'T IT TIME FOR US TO PRESENT NOW?"
and I'm like "..... Sure
/sits down"
and then it was awful and they ended 20 minutes early
so when I'm giving them the breakdown of what went right/wrong, I'm like "I was in the middle of doing you a solid, why didn't you want it?"
and he just kept being like "WELL I DESERVE AN A BUT IF YOU DIDN'T LISTEN TO WHAT I HAD TO SAY THEN THERE'S NO POINT ARGUING"
and like. CLEARLY there is an issue that I am not addressing
but I don't want it to be my job to address this?
I'm kind of okay with him just failing tbh
"i focused on other classes and skipped this one because it's not important" what exactly are they expecting to happen here
kyuupin: REMEMBER THIS GUY what a shock that he came back in a similar shitty way
I don't know how to handle a handwritten note though
should I do the outreach I probably OUGHT to do as the adult in the room
jfc what a pain in the ass though
I feel like this needs to be documented to cover your ass as well tbh
this is also the same class that has the weird disruptive one that is probably highly autistic
I can handle ONE behavioral issue in a class. That's normal. There's usually a character
but I am not skilled at handling an entire circus
there are also two other people who WOULD be entire "omg this weird student" cases who are completely unremarkable because they're not THIS bad
I wish I could be complaining about the weird girl who means well but absolutely derails any conversation that isn't about whatever she's feeling anxious about
she just needs to learn that sometimes you can't say the quiet part out loud
though tbh still better than the incel semester
I think I just need to find a way to wiggle an appointment at not-this-university
ALAS it's the appointment that's linked to healthcare
"The incel semester" was. Yeeeeah.
oh lol the nazi from a couple of weeks ago is also in this class
How do you make it through?
I complain a lot on the internet
lol ALSO IN THIS CLASS ACTUALLY! Someone stayed behind today to be like "ok so.... when are we doing stuff from the books?" and I'm like "I don't understand (shows the syllabus schedule again?)" and she was like "NO I MEAN. We should have started them right? So when...?" and I tried to explain the reading schedule again but with different words
and she goes "YEAH BUT how much do we have to read?" and then I think I fell on "next week, read half of this book, then finish that book the NEXT week, and then the NEXT week we start on THIS book"
and suddenly, HORROR crosses over her face as she understands that she is expected to not only read ONE book in her english class
but she is expected to read MORE THAN ONE BOOK
and I think that like. A this university, they're kind of catering to underrepresented students, and they're so worried about retention that they've put work into helping people through
but to the point where they've gotten so MUCH "help" that they're not used to being asked to perform
so the people who can handle challenges are bored and aloof and the people who need the support have never encountered a situation where someone has expected anything from them
and then I show up expecting to run the same class I run everywhere else and it does not go the way it usually goes
I mean Gosh can't you understand he WROTE A NOTE.
Flunk the fuck head, let him pay for a failed class again.
what the hell is this nonsense omfg
And. And this is college right.
there is a prerequisite to get into this one
lmao "you don't care to work on this class, so i don't care that you're gonna fail the class". basically i meaaaan...the audacity of saying they don't think your class is that important? okay, then you won't care if you get an F....
also the repetitiveness of saying they thought it was a better use of their time to focus on other classes. say it as many times as you like...doesn't make it true.
it's almost as if they could benefit from a writing class
does he think that because he was honest you won't fail him???
and hey maybe it was a better use of his time to focus on other classes, but in that case why not... drop... yours...
and I think that girl who didn't understand the syllabus wanted things broken down into "read chapters 1-10 by Monday", etc
it's not even... just honesty? i've been punished for honesty when really struggling rather than given accommodations, but this has such an air of LOL I DON'T CARE I'M NOT EVEN TRYING THIS DOESN'T MATTER TO ME which. i guess that's an "honest" admission but it's also super shitty and "okay then you're gonna fail???" is the only response i'd have.
"If you're confused on why you failed this class than (sic) it's because I was focusing most of my time on the other students, who put in the effort, came to me for help, and cared about the work enough to get it done. Just to clarify, I'm not complaining. You've made the choice to fail this class."
jokes aside though what the hell
the sense of entitlement some students have never fails to amaza me
definitely if he comes at you wanting to know why he failed later
I would keep that receipt self-admitted proof on his part that he wasn't doing the work and didn't intend to do the work
oh LOL I got an "I'm sorry I'm late" email from someone else in a different class and replied back something like "Don't apologize to me! I just thought your group should know that 80% of you are currently failing the course. Figured you might want to do something about that"
I'm just like. What is this performance and who is it for
it's an exaggeration
do they have to make attendance or anything like that?
but only 3 of them ever talk to me
A lot of them "make attendance" by showing up late and sleeping in the back
there are 19 in that class
On like the third class I was like "What can I do differently to keep you awake :|" and derailed the entire lecture to be like "Y'ALL. SERIOUSLY."
because I do a lot of "pauses for group discussion" and THEY WEREN'T DISCUSSING and I was ending up like half an hour ahead of schedule every class
and I'm lowkey like. Y'ALL WE CAN'T BE LEAVING EARLY EVERY DAY I'M NOT FINNA GET FIRED
I get really stressed out in environments where people are acting like I'm holding them hostage
That. Is legitimately sth I have never witnessed here at all. I have never seen a student (school or university) asleep in class
oh THAT'S pretty normal, in smaller doses at least
I usually have at least one person who's asleep (which could just mean I'm boring
)
it's... I don't think that exists here
I had a classmate in high school who spent the first year in the US and she would tell us about students sleeping in class and we all thought that was crazy
wait really? Do people just sleep at night or something
I mean people are tired but they wouldn't dare sleep in class in my experience
I slept through most of high school, tbqh
My mouth is hanging open as I read all of this but I’m also like, my dude, in the time it took you to put this garbage note together, you could have probably done some homework??
I somehow graduated with a 3.5 gpa because I took exams and turned in homework and shit but in school? Sleep through most classes.
Since I was doing well in the classes nobody woke me up ...
sometimes I struggled not to fall asleep because of either 1. poor life decisions or 2. classes TOO early (fuck you high schools for starting at like 7 am, it shouldn't be legal!!). but it was never every day
And I wouldn't have dared in college, though I'm probably just. a goody two shoes.
Still pretty sour about a lot of stuff so I don't want to open a new plurk for venting but if anyone doesn't have this muted already, SURE IS STILL A THING
I think he might have been trying to communicate that he was deciding to work on English more but w/e SURE IS A SHITHEAD AND I'M INCREDIBLY MAD AND PROBABLY MISREADING HIM
oh oops the original images weren't right and I don't feel like buying a plurk coin to get the edit button back
THERE those are the right caps
I usually try not to be THAT "fuck you" in writing honestly?
that probably comes off as unnecessarily harsh and it DEFINITELY can be used against me if the student wants to take it there
but my levels of Done are off the charts
......the dread as i realized you'd come back to this plurk..............
(i realize they are an adult but they're behaving like a spoiled baby so)
LOL I mean I just had to give the "you are an adult and I'm not going to wipe your ass for you" speech so you're not wrong
the nerve of this fella
google scholar has a citation button
all he had to do was click it
I never would have known.
I also got the impression that he's misunderstanding the assignment entirely but I didn't want to overload my note with too many reasons why he sucks
gotta take baby steps so he can process the level of Suck
oh oh wait what happened with the plagarist
oh I threatened to throw her out of the class, she cried, I gave her a second chance and she plagiarized again
so I need to go through with the full reporting but I haven't done that yet because it's like 20 pages of writing and I have other shit to do with myself
but she's still showing up to every class and crying at me so I should probably get that done soonish because I'm just like "already submitted it, it's up to the folks upstairs now"
except I haven't actually done that so she's not on pace to receive any consequences >>
how do you take that second chance and fuck it up like that girl???
I plagiarized in high school because I was depressed af and couldn't cope with doing the work, and I got a chance to resubmit and TOOK IT even though I was told I would get a C No matter what. And that was a gift because my parents talked to the school about my severe depression.
oh because she's esl and doesn't know how to construct something at this level
like I know HOW that happened I'm just past my ability to juggle the load of Things and I need at least a few of them to not be my project
yeah that was high school's job
ehhhhh sort of. people learn adaptive survival mechanisms
when English isn't someone's first language, sometimes they feel more comfortable writing in their native tongue and machine translating to English. and that gets you through a lot of compulsory education
the problem she's going with is that my assignments are like "read this thing and analyze it and have opinions about it" but as an ESL student she can't understand what she's being asked to read
so she's in the deep end because she can't use the techniques she's honed to get by in the same way
but she's not linguistically equipped enough to perform what she's been asked to do in an ethical way
this is why most universities will have an alternate track for esl students to let them achieve their English requirement without taking english-for-native-speakers level stuff
like I get it but there are only so many spoons
and she has already slipped into some cracks and I can identify it but I do not have a spare hand to pull her out
different problem than the guy who keeps writing me notes
