I'm reading the Marvel Masterworks Atlas Era Venus Vol 1 right now, and I noticed something in the first issue that I hadn't given much thought to before.

The way that Venus ends up on Earth from Venus parallels the way that John Carter ends up on Mars from Earth! I'm sure it was an intentional beat, given that Venus came out about 36 years after A Princess of Mars, and there was a fair amount of crossover between comics and pulp stories back then.

And here's the snippet of A Princess of Mars, where Carter travels to Mars:

What's most interesting is how when Carter ends up on Mars, he gains superpowers because of the different atmosphere, but when Venus ends up on Earth:

It's such an interesting reversal: a man travels to a different planet and gains superpowers and becomes a savior; a woman travels to a different planet and loses her powers (though she still becomes a savior)

Granted, Venus eventually regains her superpowers, but I've noticed that the Marvel wiki has some stuff incorrect about Venus there. This version of Venus is eventually retconned into being a siren who only THOUGHT she was the goddess Venus, but the wiki attributes the Atlas series to the goddess Aphrodite, which is incorrect.

(And yeah, I'm on a weird Venus kick right now, between reading this and "Venus and Aphrodite: A Biography of Desire" by Bettany Hughes. )
