angriestbird This is where it gets fun because Bette has no idea that her cousin Bruce's wards - which she'll soon realize is why Jason looks kinda familiar - were Robins. Or that her cousin Bruce is the Bat.
omg. I didn't realize. WHOOPS AND SURPRISE, BETTE...
Oh hell. That's hilarious and I should throw Dick her direction.
Yeees. Jason only has some idea of Bette's history with the rest of the family
Whoops and surprising Bette is always fun! What I love about this as well is that she can't even be mad at the Bruce she'll eventually meet in game because he has no Kane relation or skin in the game, he's just - to her - an alt.
Instead of Martha Kane it was Martha Arkham so that's a fun thing to take in
Bette. Bette, you're adorable.
litshard: Adorable and temporarily broken!
Oh, she will be, once she’s processed all this. The great thing about Bette is how resilient she is, and how she’s able to bounce back every time she’s knocked down in some way.
Trying to remember. When Bette and Dick butted heads, how long after Donna was that?
In the Beast Boy mini? That was published about three years before Donna died in Graduation Day.
Okay. So it's just general worry about her being untrained and possibly that Bruce would kill him for getting letting his cousin get hurt.
Yeah, it was very much like you've got heart, you've got spunk, but you're not cut out for it, so it's time to hang up the costume because while you have a bright future, it's not as a crimefighter.
And of course Bette, ever the stubborn, driven one, is like "Quit? Like hell I will."
Had the Titan Academy existed at the time, he MIGHT have funneled her that direction. Just...somewhere where she could have learned.
I think Bette would have really benefitted from someone taking her under their wing and actually training her, because she was definitely eager to learn but at the same time even when Jacob Kane was training her with his Murder of Crows, she still...kind of did things her way. Going for a brawl when she could have used her opponent's weight against them, etc
The most interesting throughline about her - and it really stands because Flashpoint/New 52 didn't walk her characterization/development back - is that Bette always evolves and improves. From her growth in the Beast Boy mini and then again as Hawkfire, she's always working on upgrading and bettering herself, no matter what anyone else might think.
I don't think that Dick ever worried that she would be a quitter. He was more worried about her getting killed.
Which he had every reason to worry about because she very nearly did later on! Girl was in a coma and everything
