I always forget about Bette's short appearance in Superboy #65 (1999)
latest #8

This at least a half a year before he undergoes her makeover in the Beast Boy mini, but the most amusing thing about this is the inflated sense of self importance Bette has regarding her own superheroic career.

For instance, the fact that she doesn't see herself as a second-stringer. https://images.plurk.com/1rKaBSwakP5Znh6KEuDlsz.png

And the fact that she actually believes that everyone knows who she is. https://images.plurk.com/586bILAqGggfmWYR8BPvVI.png

(Kon's been lost in Hypertime or something, I think, and Cadmus is looking to hire a replacement, so a BUNCH of heroes show up, Bette amongst them.)

Even Superboy himself is unaware of who Bette is. https://images.plurk.com/E47Umr0TtUXllcfgHTDgT.png

It's mostly played for comedy, the bit where no one knows who Bette is against her somewhat inflated sense of ego, but I really see this as laying the groundwork for the Batwoman arc in Detective Comics 861-863, "Go", where Bette asks Kate how to let go of the past. https://images.plurk.com/5CuKfVPZHvJ6JyRuMXFTgr.png https://images.plurk.com/1kFVX6YInOT4001D4WthOn.jpg

But also, one of the things I appreciate about the Superboy appearance is that it solidifies that though Bette may think a little too highly of herself, she's in this for more than just glory or money, which is a nice change from how she was characterized soon after COIE. https://images.plurk.com/A7bA08aiN6dwiJy7XSGnt.png

Honestly, for a character that no one seems to care about too much, or to want to write or feature too much, it's kind of remarkable how much growth she's had across her relatively very few appearances in comics.
